    Help Opening a Locked Door

My kids were playing with the locks on one of our bedroom doors, and now the door is locked (fortunately no one is in the room). The lock needs a real key (which we don't have), not one of those flat edge keys. The windows to the room are locked shut, so we can't crawl in a window. I'm about ready to grab a hacksaw and cut the knob off. Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm sure I could call a locksmith, but it would probably cost more than a new knob.

Can you take a pic of the lock. I might be able to give you a pointer.

Re: Help Opening a Locked Door

I would go ahead and start cutting. If you have kids, you don't want a lock on a door that you don't have a key to anyways. Eventually, you'll end up needing to replace it.

I would try drilling it out first though. Get a nice sized bit and go right though the center of the keyhole.

Re: Help Opening a Locked Door

Use an old credit card or substitute to open it. As long as it's not a deadbolt you can slide it into the door seem above the lock. Once you have the card in, pull straight down and it'll open.

Re: Help Opening a Locked Door

Is the edging around the inside of the door frame solid? Like the little piece of wood that is usually in place to hide where the tongue of the door mechanism fits into the jam?

That's usually how I get locked doors open. Usually that piece of 'trim' on the inside of the door frame is just stapled in place so you should be able to fit a flat knife in between that trim and the doorframe and pop the tongue out of the jamb

If you have room to get a credit card in between the door and the jamb, that works nicely.

if none of the above work.depending on how the door opens.. u could take it out at the hinges....

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

Re: Help Opening a Locked Door

    The hinges are inaccessible.

I can lift the trim enough to access the latch. I can shove a knife in there, and I can get the latch to retract about 3/4 of the way, but not enough to open the door. Am I doing something wrong?

Nope, although I've never really had to force it too hard. Make sure that whatever you're using isn't too sharp, otherwise you may be digging the knife into the actual metal of the latch and getting it stuck.

If you've got it on the latch, jiggle it while pulling towards the door. While doing this, give the door a good shove in. If you've got the latch 3/4 of the way in you should be able to pop it open.
