    Column in Ames Trib today

Ames' version of Debbie Downer: Dick Haws, a columnist for the Ames Tribune, and a retired journalism professor at ISU. Like a few of retirees around here I know, he takes a very cynical and crochety view towards Ames and ISU sports. Must be something about getting on in years. His column about the Applebee's mini-pack and also Ames' shopping potential is an example.

Re: Column in Ames Trib today

I have to be honest and say I don't see much in the column to disagree with. I made several trips to Chicago and Indianapolis this summer with more on the way, and the amount I spent on gasoline alone really bit me. To think fuel prices, which also effects a lot of the other things we buy, are not going to force some people to give up their football tickets is pretty shortsighted. I personally know of a handful of good ISU fans that are not renewing their tickets due only to the tight budget they're on. They want to get the tickets but just can't afford it this year.

As far as the shopping center situation goes, I don't see anything incorrect with what he wrote regarding that either.

It's the continued (incorrect) assertion that the ticket policy was put in place as a way to grift UI fans, instead of a way to get the cherry-picking ISU fans to come to more than one game per year.

So if you agree that it's "folly" to try to keep up with the arms race of the Big 12, then what is the alternative? Do we just wave the white flag and relegate ourselves to last place in all major sports in the conference? Or maybe we should relinquish our membership in the Big 12 and go shopping for a new conference that we can financially compete with. Maybe the MAC would be kind enough to let us join.

I don't mean this to be a smartass comment, but I guess I don't know what our choices are.

Exactly CarolinaCY - you can't have it both ways - he criticizes Jamie and his "money culture" but then pokes fun at our 3-9 record and that we won't win this year either. There's a segment of people in this town who are living in an era of 25 years ago, yet expect ISU to win their fair share today...

I would hate to have to pay for quality coaches and facilities.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

No problem with your comment, Carolina. I see both sides of it. I'm saying that disposable income is lower for a lot of people at the moment (me included) and thus to adjust the ticket policy makes sense. I am a big fan of ISU athletics but donations to an athletic department are not at the top of my spending list.

Another column from a typical "Keep Ames Boring" activist who takes glee in forecasting the demise of other people's ideas. Buttholes like this need to understand that Ames and ISU have to look to what the community and ISU supporters of the future will want and not so much on what we have or the way that things have been.
