Hmmmmm......but then we'd have Josh Johnson at QB and RB. Listening to the game on the radio would be REALLY confusing.

Bret Meyer is NOT a good quarterback, in fact he is far from it. Maybe with a great QB teaching him he could be better, but he makes way too many mistakes and is not nearly as great of a passer as some think.

Few would be able to do better than him when they have the line that is "protecting" him. He can be a very good passer when he has time.

Maybe I missed something... I posted this thread not to humiliate Brett Meyer, (because he's still #1 in my book) but merely to show what a QB coach can do with a young non-scholarship player. NOW, put a scholie in his hands and we should be able to expect more out of that QB. And hey, it's the nature of the game, you have to compete for your position.

Just because the guy had an off year because he was running for his life most of the time doesn't mean we should throw silly statements out like this.

The guy was a Pre-season All Big 12 1st teamer. He had an excellent year last year.

Watch out, St. Mary's and Idaho State. Now those are some programs you need to out recruit when you want to go 'to the next level'?

You aren't predicted to be First Team All Big 12 Conference for nothing in pre-season. Bret Meyer is good. Yes, his pocket awareness needs work. There is no doubt about it. Harbaugh should be able to mold him into a great quarterback, if his line can block.

Also, I hope that the new coaching staff runs more crossing patterns with Todd Blythe. I know Todd likes the sideline, but he needs to be in the open field more.

The short pass could work miracles for ISU the next couple years while the new coaching staff puts a new OL in place.

IMO, Bret is a good qb. He has experience and would excel in a different system. He makes fewer mistakes than people think and he avoids injuries unlike some other players we have. I hope SD has some linemean that need free tuition. Being non scholarship at SD may mean we can get more players than we thought. And we could recruit California, just where Bill Callahan wants to get his players.

Bret is athletic and fluid and could make a good wide receiver (again IMO).

I don't understand people who love to bash Meyer. You could put Tom Brady behind our line and he would look bad. Is Meyer perfect, no, but he has proven he can be a heck of a quarterback given halfway decent protection. See the '04 and '05 seasons.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Well if he's already a junior, he'd be out of eligibility by the time he got here.

7TD against Valparaiso? I think even our offense could pull that off.

I wouldn't say Meyer's '04 season makes him good. He threw at a 51% clip. That is hardly efficient.

He does not have the chance to be a good QB when he is back there running for his life every play. Heck even Seneca would be struggling behind this offensive line.

Re: Should Harbaugh come, I hope he brings this guy with him!

I agree that Meyer has seemed to regress a little his Junior year, but I still believe he has what it takes given the right teachings and a capable O-line. He did lock-on to recievers and take too long in deciding to run, and I think it was the responsibility of Fitch to notice and correct that. Perhaps his new QB coach will. In my opinion, if he corrects those things he's in for another solid year.
