    Any Dentists on this Board?

My wife has to get two root canals and associated crowns. We recently moved to Massachusetts and this was my wife's first visit to this dentist. The treatment plan was for two root canals and two crowns for a total cost of $6400. Our insurance has an annual limit of $2000, so I feel compelled to investigate whether this is a fair price. Are prices on these things relatively fixed? Would it be a lot cheaper if she went home and had it done in Iowa?

    Thanks!

There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams

Re: Any Dentists on this Board?

Is that quote from a 'regular dentist' or from a specialist?

A quick Google shows that a front tooth would be 300-600 while a molar would be 700-1200, with those prices coming from a non-specialist. One site stated that a specialist would charge 30 to 50 percent more. Also it looks like Iowa would be cheaper than the east coast.

My wife is a dental hygienist and I bet she'd think $6,400 is a little high. (I'll find out more later)

I work with orthodontists, and have had two root canals - $750 each here in Ames. You generally find that dentists charge more in the NE and California, but I'd say that's a little extraordinary.

Go to Mexico and have it done. You can pay for a trip to Cabo San Lucas, have an American trained dentist do a great job, enjoy a great vacation and still come out dollars ahead.

I have also had two root canals - both in Ames - same price as Angie. I forget what the crowns cost...

I don't remember, either??? I know that my insurance paid me back 50% of the root canal after the fact.

Besides the pain associated with the root canals, I'm sure it would be a great vacation.

Just talked to my wife... She thought you could get all that work done in Iowa for no more than $4K. It all depends on the exact needs, but $6,400 seemed too high.
