    How attractive is Ames?

All we Clone fans hear about when we are in the hiring process for a new coach is whether or not Ames is a good enough setting to get a really good coach. I think it gets more and more attractive every year. More money being spent, high season ticket sales, and and AD who seems committed to success.

Ames is attractive...if K-State can make manhattan back into a football town...Ames would be heaven compared to that place.

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

Ames is definitely attractive. If you listen to the coaches talk, they can't say enough nice things about the community, schools, affordable housing, entertainment, etc. Why would LE wife & kids stay in town long after he was no longer coaching basketball.

She was hot when whe was 18 but since she had 2 kids she is not so much attractive. I saw Ames at the Lumberyard a few weeks ago. Still has some moves though.

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

I live in Ames and commute to DSM. It depends on what you want, Ames is a great town for the midwest, but we won't be growing any mountains nor having any beaches anytime soon.

Coaches come in and are welcomed right away, not as coach so and so, but a a new neighbor.

A quick personal example. My son was at a youth group meeting at church, introduced himself to a new kid and as they were chatting another friend came up just as they got to the what does your dad do part. My son explained my job and then asked this new kid what his dad does and got bopped in the head by the third kid as the 3rd kid was saying "McDermott: as in coach McDermott".

There really are no celebrities in Ames and some coaches really like their kids in that environment.

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

I really don't see Ames any less attractive than Manhattan, or any of the other smaller BigXII cities. If Snyder can bring high-talent teams there is no reason to believe we can't here in Ames.

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

The city of Ames itself is a nice community but on a national level you have to see the big picture:

-About 50,000 population then you have DSM about 40 minutes away that is not what you call a "large" metropolitian city either compared to say Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago, etc.
    -Cold snowy winters.
-One of the lowest athletic budgets in the Big 12.
-Not a lot of football tradition

I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I loved Ames and if it weren't for that commute to Des Moines I'd probably live there. Just saying that compared to say one of the Texas or Oklahoma schools in the Big 12 we don't have a lot geographically to offer other than that "we are nice people." It's definately a rewarding place to be at if you are up for a challenge but you would have to do some spectacular things to get the national exposure in Ames that you would get almost immediately at a larger program.

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

Anyone who has been Manhattan, has to have an appreciation of Ames. The lot we tailgated in there has sheep grazing in it in the offseason. There is a grain elevator just down the street from the stadium. We saw nothing but scrubush, and nothing resembling a city there. It's like comparing a used up 50 year old prostitute to a beautiful young co-ed. Ok, that might be a stretch, but imagine throwing a college in a dried out cow town and you have Manhattan. If Bill Snyder, and now Huggybear can bring top talent to play in that craphole, I can only imagine a good recruiter could have a signifigantly easier time bringing the same caliber of players to Ames. If you compare the atmosphere and aesthetics of Ames vs, for example my whipping boy of Manhattan, it really is a pretty attractive place for recruits. Also, despite what Sqwaks would say, there a pretty good number of attractive girls in Ames these days. That always helps too :)

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

I know which lot you were talking about. We tailgated in the lot closer to the stadium that was just on the edge of the paved reserved lots. That was fun but they have that stupid rule that you can't drink although you can put it in plastic cups and no one bothers you.

My brother was in Boulder this weekend and says tailgating stinks there. Not where to park really. Kansas is pretty bad too. No close parking so you wind up paying some frat house to park in their lot and tailgate with maybe another 20 cars or less. We are pretty lucky to have 6 hours of tailgating and the lots that we do have. Possibly the best tailgating in the Big 12 although I still have yet to tour the south schools. I know Baylor is a dry campus and you have to hide your beer at tailgate.

I realize that, but I don't expect us to be any less attractive than some of the smaller schools in the Big XII North. As already mentioned, Snyder did it in Manhattan. Why not here?

    Re: How attractive is Ames?

A big selling point for Ames is the school system and the quality of life. Ames may not have mountain views or ocean breezes but for a young coach or any young couple with school aged children, the quality of schools and the overall quality of life in Ames are huge pluses. At what a coach makes, they can afford a very nice life in Ames, while providing a safe environment for their children. Heck, I wish I could pack up the kids and move back, but they no-longer fit in their suitcases....

Too true. The other part is that Ames is a small college town, not a large city on it's own. Des Moines isn't far, but it isn't a huge cosmo type city either.

I wouldn't think Ames isn't a detractor to most prospective coaches, but I wouldn't think it is a lure either. Ames is great, but not all that distinguishable from many other midwest college towns.
