Ford Motor Company posts $8.7 Billion loss

Ford has posted an $8.7 Billion quarterly loss, and has announced that they are moving away from trucks to fuel-efficient cars. That would be a massive loss even if it was for an entire year. For a quarterly loss, it might be unprecedented outside of the real estate and financial sectors.

Why does it seem that American auto makers take more hits than anyone else. Is it how they are run? I dont want to start a bash on US carmakers thread, I just would like to know how it works.

Pensions and wages are two pretty big reasons.

It is ok... Obama said he is going to bail them out. More of your tax dollars at work.

Because people (aka my mom) view consumer ratings like it's the ultimate truth. I couldn't even get her to consider any american cars at all when she just recently bought her new car.

Is there any transportation maker/ supplier company air/ground making any money besides Toyota?

    Airlines don't.

Isn't Fords quarterly losses because they wrote off a bunch of crap though?

hmmm.... I'm also wondering that while Ford engineers were perfecting the Excursion, Toyota was pushing efforts and funds toward hybrid technology? Oh well, this all just part of the free market, right? some win, some lose?

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

It would seem like this should be an easy transition for Ford. They already sell smaller, more fuel efficient cars most everywhere else in the world...

$4b?... thats about 3-4 weeks in Iraq.... that might have something to do with our national debt as well.

As a prof. at ISU once told me. "They should hire me to be their CEO, I could easily loose them billions of dollars, and I would do it for half the salary."

Ironically I could get dozens of players arrested and botch sexual assault investigations for a 10th of what they pay Kirkie...
