You know that slippery slope thing

A Los Angeles City Council committee has unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in a 32-square-mile area, mostly in South Los Angeles.

That's not a slippery slope. The city of Los Angeles just jumped off a cliff.

Re: You know that slippery slope thing

    This is freaking ridiculous.

I'm as disgusted as the next guy in regard to the obesity problem in this country but really... taking away people's rights is not the way to go about it.

I'd like to see an agressive ad campaign like the "this is your brain on drugs" thing started. I'd like to see people face the same kind of insurance hikes started that smokers face. But I don't think you should be able to quell the ability of people to start a business.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

Re: You know that slippery slope thing

Here is a quote that is typical.

"“The people don’t want them, but when they don’t have any other options, they may gravitate to what’s there,” said Councilwoman Jan Perry, who proposed the ordinance in June, and whose district includes portions of South L.A. that would be affected by the plan"

    Here are some other ideas:

Ban liqueur stores=I don't want to drink but all these stores just pull me in

Ban banks=I didn't want to get a loan but the rate was so cheap

Ban car washes=They use too much water

I would assume fried and greasy. Im sure there will be a stipulation that says if you have an alternate healthy menu you can sqeak by the ban. Sorry Hardess, you are outta here.

Better yet, they could ban smoking in public places. Oops, that's already done and, according to earlier threads, has met "our" approval.

Re: You know that slippery slope thing

This is the beauty of the state system/electoral democracy. Those council members were voted in by the people that live in that area. That law only affects LA. Representatives are elected by the poeple. The people are getting what they voted for. Sucks for those who opposed the majority, but thats how America works, and always has. I'm sure anyone with that kind of agenda would have a hard time getting elected here in Iowa. Keep in mind, all this law does is prevent any MORE fast food restaurants from being built in the area. It doesn't tell current business owners what to do. It's the same thing as towns that won't allow adult bookstores to be built w/in city limits, but I highly doubt anyone would post an article about that as an excuse to point out the vast Commie-Pinko-Brain washing-cannibalistic-take over the world-rape your children-left wing conspiracy, right?

*I would personally oppose such a ban, I just get annoyed with the persistent accusations on this board that left wing thinkers are this evil sect hell bent on destroying America...

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.
