    Interview Process

We all know that Pollard works quickly in finding coaching replacements...but is that a good thing?

It seems like JP just locks in on 1 guy and doesn't consider all the other possibilities. We all thought Jeter was the guy...so did Pollard. GMac had to call ISU, not the other way around like it should be. Why can't we interview 4-6 candidates and take the best one? Why narrow it down to 1 person without exhausting all of the other possibilities?

I sure hope JP isn't locked on Harbaugh or Brewster and at least explores all of the options.

It seems like it has worked out pretty good for basketball so far. So I am not going to question him until I see it isnt going well.

It may seem like he does that, but I bet its different. He could have been talking to these people for a long time. I wouldnt put too much stock in that idea of him locking in on one. Hes a sheister. =)

    Re: Interview Process

I get the feeling Jamie gets a short-list of 3-5 potentials, then narrows it down to 2. What he does an amazing job at is keeping it private to minimize the potential damage of having a public search that could result in negative publicity (like from someone turning us down or expressing that they don't want to be considered).

Get your point on the apprearance of it looking like he zones in on 1-2 people....however, i'm not sure that he doesn't check the temperature of 4-6 privately and then zoning in on the right person for his criteria. Again, keeping it private is the way to go in my opinion.

I just remember how the search for LE's replacement went. Think we got a few black eyes when people kept expressing their dis-interest. Some of that may have come from them reacting to media speculation....but some may have come from the AD not moving quickly in a focused, private manner.

Don't believe everything you read in the paper...

By the time Pollard talked to Jeter he had already talked to GMac and decided he should be the next coach. He did talk to Jeter to assure himself he was making the right call.

Its always a good thing to hire someone fast when the opportunity is right then and there. Both coaches Jamie hired were excellent choices. We already have 5 wins in basketball (including exhibition) - last year we were sitting at 3-2 at this time including exhibition losses - even with Stinson and Blalock around. I trust in JP's decisions.

    Re: Interview Process

You are taking one instance on a hiring in basketball and the assumptions you made from secondary sources and then you consider that he makes all hires the same as the first?

    Re: Interview Process

JP knows only to well the impact that a HC Hire has on the program. He also knows the next "Hot seat" could be him if he makes a mistake on this hire. His stamp on ISU hinges on a head Football coach, not the basketball or wrestling hires! A 4 million dollar Basketball program doesn't equal a 15-20 mil football program, not to say roundball isn't important.
He will take his time, 2-4 weeks at the earliest, he will posture, contact, posture and then pounce!

    Re: Interview Process

In this day and ago NO coach will let his name be put on an official "Short List" and agree to be interviewed only not to be chosen. If you interview the coach officially, you are prepared to hire him. I'm not saying that's the way it should be, but that's the way it is. Even to agree you're on a short list with the media is virtually never done. Again, you're setting yourself up to look bad.
Sure different from the days of the official search committies and all the BS that went with them. I do agree having a list of potentials is great and telephone conversations can make sense, but no one can travel anywhere without someone knowing today. So face to face wont work I don't believe.
