    Directv Dish Aiming

Ok, so my place got nailed with the storm the other night. Trees, shingles, fence, patio furniture the whole thing. We didn't have power until today so we stayed in a hotel last night.

I get home and get ready to start cleaning up the yard, while I am changing I turn on the TV. No signal. So I go outside and check my dish. It is blown completely around up against my house.

Ok, so I check elevation, it looks to be on. So now I am working the azimuth. No matter where I turn this thing it won't change the signal strength. I have been out there turning the damn dish for an hour.

Is it possible that my LMBs were damaged during the storm as well and that is why I am not getting anything? They look to be fine. Any ideas on what to try next? I called Directv and they can't get someone out here until AUG 6th? Are they serious? Where is Wayne Morgan when I need him?

    THANKS!

    Re: Directv Dish Aiming

Anything is possible, but with the new dishes they are VERY touchy... Do you know what "type" of dish it is... That makes a difference on how you aim it.

You may just have to bite the bullet and call someone to have it realigned.

EDIT:Oh, and if DirecTV is saying August... try calling a local dealer in the phone book... explain your situation and they may be able to help you out.

It is a Thinline 5 LMB model, but I only have 3 LMBs in it.

I realigned mine after I got tired of it going out any time a bird farted. It just takes really small adjustments. What kind of number are you getting for signal strength? Mine went from around 80 to around 92, which seemed to make all the difference in the world.

    Access Card: OK
    Reciever ID: OK
    LNB Output Failed
Phone: Failed (don't have a phone cord in it)

    Re: Directv Dish Aiming

Good luck. I have the same dish and for the life of me, I could not get good signal by myself. I had to wait 10 days for a DTV tech to come out. But now I have his personal cell # and I can call him whenever I need to.

I agree with the idea of trying to call someone from the phonebook also.

    Re: Directv Dish Aiming

Are there places around Des Moines that do work for Directv that are not affilated directly with them?

    Re: Directv Dish Aiming

The 5LNB dishes are VERY difficult to aim. Even the 3LNB dishes aren't a cakewalk. You've got less than a degree in azimuth, elevation and skew as your margin of error. Unless you have a GOOD satellite finder (and if you're asking the question, you probably don't), you're going to need someone to come out and re-align it. You might be able to get it pointed roughly the right direction and hit the 101 which should get you most of DTV's channels until you can get someone out to fix it. Just make sure that it's level, and slowly pan it across the right azimuth +/- 10 degrees or so (it's 190 for Des Moines). Dishpointer.com is a good site that might be able to help you a bit.

LNBs aren't overly complicated pieces of equipment, so it's unlikely yours are damaged.

I don't know the local people who do DirecTV stuff, so sorry I can't help you out with that.

    Re: Directv Dish Aiming

I am getting nowhere with this dish. Starting to think I have more troubles than just the dish getting moved.

If anyone knows of a local company that does installs/service that is not directly affiliated with Directv I would appreciate the info.
