ISU Questions for Jon Miller or Ken Miller

What is the media saying about ISU in KC? What about coaches? What is the overall buzz about ISU?

    Thanks

Re: ISU Questions for Jon Miller or Ken Miller

I can answer this for you. There is no buzz at all. All they will say is like "They lost their starting QB and their WR. It's going to be tough for them" I honestly don't think the media knows much about our program other than what's in the media guide if they even read it. Most of the discussion is going to be about MO, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma... That's why so many of us say we're going to surprise... It's because the media generally doesn't do much research with the exception of probably a couple of journalists.

Well we did lose Meyer, Blythe, Rubin, and Bowen. We are adding a lot of previous role players and redshirts.

    Probably not much buzz. lol

I can say there is very little buzz outside of Iowa, and rightfully so. Unless you see all the little things going on like we do, all you know is that we're a very young team with a young coaching staff and a lackluster history.

Of course they're going to be underestimating us

It was kind of disconcerting to see that, according to Phil Steele's ranking system, we're the 2nd most experienced team in the Big 12 this year (23rd overall).

While we may be experienced, we're not at the high profile, key positions. The positions that get people excited.

The high profile positions get media attention and get people excited, but it's the offensive line that wins games (determining how good your skill position players look along the way). And our offensive line went from mediocre/okay at the start of the 2007 season to pretty good at the end, and with the players who were ready to start at the end of last year now becoming eligible, it should be even better in 2008. Offensive line play doesn't get buzz at media days, but it will get noticed once the season starts.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

I couldn't possibly care less what anyone says about ISU. I don't read a single preseason publication or story. They know less about ISU than I do.

I used to assume that the paid experts really were experts. Then, you read more and more, watch more and more, and realize that these folks only know what they've bothered to look at, which really isn't very much, probably just what some other yokel has already said.

You learn a lot more by looking for information yourself than listening to these folks.

Don't feel bad man. It's just that there were some times where it was clear we were the best football team in the state, and even then, it was hard to get buzz or hype because the Hawk fans try to discount anything we do well.

In order for a program like ours to get buzz we have to play well over a consistent period of time. We haven't really done that as of recently and the media often has a short memory as far as things go.. It isn't like they are going to say "Well in 2002 they had this great player named Seneca Wallace and they were ranked for a good portion of the year... I wonder how they are doing now"

Instead, they go "only won 3 games last year, and they lost to a I-AA team. They have only a 2nd year coach, and lost their star players on offense and defense. Look for them to do about the same"

If we can put together some winning seasons and get an all Big XII type player or two, then the media will be more interested in our program.

I hope we can one day get to a point like this. Building a football program is hard, especially with a tight recruiting budget. I know I will always support our team and coach (whoever he is). If we can get to a point where we can play the top teams in the conference and not get consistently blown out by them, it wouldn't matter to me the number of wins and losses as often times games can be decided on a blown call or a breakdown on 1 player.

That's true in a lot of things.

I know amateurs and enthusiasts who are better than the majority of professionals. In more than one field.

Astronomy, for instance, has lots of enthusiasts who find things the pros don't.

Same thing with other scientific fields.

Re: ISU Questions for Jon Miller or Ken Miller

Just wondering, who is the ISU counterpart to Jon Miller? I just don't think there is a yin and yang going on anymore.

Years ago, there was a chubby guy that was inciteful, and a true hawk-hater. Now, he seems to cater to the dark side because of business interests.

Admittedly, I live in the SE armpit of Iowa, and I don't have access to DM radio; what I've noticed is from CY-Hawk TV airings and CF web boards.

From my limited perspective, Jeremy is our standard bearer.
