Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

It seems to me that people were getting all excited about Brewster because of his ability to recruit. That is probably 5th on the list of traits I would look for in a new coach.

    My priorities would be:

    1) A guy who brings in a gimmick offense(ie T-Tech) or sophisticated pro-style offense.
    2) A HC who can develop players focusing on technique & fundamentals.
    3) A coach who has an eye for overlooked talent.
    4) A coach with a ton of enthusiasm & salesman in their personality. He doesn't need to be a recruiter, but a closer.

Until ISU has sustained success(8-9 wins) over a period of 4-5 seasons, ISU isn't going to get 4-5 star recruits out of Texas, Florida, California, etc. If the next coach is going to succeed he is going to need to sign 2 & 3 star kids and develop them into All Big 12 type players.

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

Illinois tried that with Ron Turner (Chicago Bears O-Coordinator now) and won the 2001 Big Ten Title. But the man couldn't recruit to save his life (Illinois is 2-27 in Big 10 play over the last 3 years) even coming off a 10-1 season. Insert Ron Zook into this losing program and he has landed numerous big time recruits ("Juice" Williams, Arellius Benn to name a few). Being able to coach is key but it can only take you so far. You need talent. When you combine the 2, then watch out.

Zook is getting some real good players in his system and they have looked much better this year! I think we need a head coach that can recruit. Cordinators are the ones that call plays and coach the kids....

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

It seems to me that Brewster should be pretty good at both your 1st and 2nd priorities. He has been an offensive coach under a very good offensive mind the last couple years in Shanahan and several others throughout his career. This is only my opinion but I do not want a TT type of offense. Secondly he has shown that he can develop players, for example taking an undrafted Gates at SD and turning him into one of the best tight ends in the league.

You don't recruit in the NFL so Brewster must be able to do some of those things you listed.

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

How come no one knows about any coaches being contacted? It seemed like when the basketball thing was going down we knew exactly when coaches flew anywhere or did anything related to the ISU job. This all smells of something coming out of left field while we are looking in deep right.

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

Mark Farley? Or the Drake coach? Kirk (swap coaches)? Is that left field? Or right field?

Sounds like JP or Johnny Majors group has informally asked around to Brewster, Pellini, etc with no hot leads yet. Might depend if we offer $1.5M and their interest may go up. Maybe Central Michigan coach might be the ticket after all.

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

I always hear that it's tough to recruit to Ames, but I think that is over blown. We have much better facilites than we did 12 years ago, and plans for more. A good recruiting coach can get a kid excited to play anywhere. What makes Ames, IA a more difficult sell than Manhattan, KS; Maddison, WI; or Iowa City. And if we are talking about Texas, California and Florida recruits, why not ISU over Rutgers, Texas Tech, Boise State. All of those places were bad football schools in not-so-attractive towns that have had recent sucess building a program and attracting recruits. It's not impossible, just difficult.

    The Season Isn't Over

Wayne Morgan was canned about a week after ISU's season ended. People speculated about Jeter & McDermott, but Jamie wasn't able to meet with either until their teams were eliminated from the NCAA tournament.

Things will remain tight lipped until until the season is over. No way a head coach for a team battling for a BCS bowl or conference championship wants the distraction of one of his assistants names being leaked for another job.

Re: Are We Looking for a Recruiter?

It's going to be difficult to get a string of 8-9 win seasons if you don't have much in the way of talent. Coaching ability and recruiting aren't mutually exclusive, and one doesn't always lead to another. If you can't do both, you won't ever make it to that upper echelon of teams that compete every year.
