Laptop purchase help in Des Moines

I am visiting my parents this week and they have asked me to help them purchase a laptop since they just got a wireless router. At any rate I don't have the time to really research anything nor can I order online since I need to set it up today for them. I was hoping someone has done some research and could let me know if any good deals are out there. They live in Johnston so anything in the metro des moines area would be helpful.

Basically need a laptop that has decent speed. Not concerned with memory or any of that since they still have a desktop they will use to store info. The laptop will only be utilized for internet purposes around the house. Refurbs also welcome. Looking for something reliable but cheap.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

How much do you want to spend.

This would get them everything they need and a lot more. I can;t believe I'm telling you to go to BB but if you have to have it today.

Get them a Dell inspiron 1525.

That should be quite adequate, and can be had for ~600 or so.

Make sure you get plenty of RAM. Vista is a hog.

I'd avoid Gateway like the plague - it doesn't have near the quality that it did even 5 years ago. My brother-in-law and mother-in-law have had many problems with their Gateways and the Army even canceled their service contract with them. If you're looking for a Windows-based system, I'd go either Dell or HP.

However, if you're getting a 32-bit system (most likely), don't get anymore than 3 GB of ram, as 32-bit Vista cannot access that 4th GB - essentially you'd be wasting your money.

FWIW, I've had a Gateway laptop for about a month now without problems. I know their reputation, and I hoped for the best when I bought it, but so far so good.

Where can you pick up a Dell on the same day?

I recently purchased two Dell 1525's and they are very nice for the money.

If you're buying it from a store, I sincerely doubt that you would even have the option of putting 4GB into a laptop

I noticed that a recent Wal-Mart ad here in St. Joseph, MO had a special for a Toshiba laptop that had a 15.4" screen, 2 GB of memory, and a 120 GB hard drive... for $400. Keep an eye out for local deals.

Re: Laptop purchase help in Des Moines

my wife bought an Acer laptop from newegg, for right at $1000. Very nice system, and it's been pretty solid. If you need it right away, Staples carries them, and that's where she did a lot of her research.

Myself? I'd get a monster desktop for the same amount, and get a cheap laptop just to access the internet. You can use Remote Desktop to access the desktop from the laptop, since you are on a router. Sounds hard to do, but it really isn't. The desktop will be cheaper, and you'll have backup when the laptop is down, and vice versa. Plus you can upgrade the desktop much easier.

I'd like to stay around the $500 mark.

I have a laptop I bought 2 years ago from Dell for $400 that works great for general duties.
