    ISU in other conferences

Somebody brought up ISU being the Baylor of the Big 12 North. Which I agree with and made me think of something a friend and I were discussing the other day. We were comparing what team ISU would be in other conferences. I am still having trouble on a few conferences, namely the Pac 10 and SEC. But if you had to compare ISU to a team in each BCS conference, who would it be?

    SEC = Mississippi State
    Pac 10 = Arizona

Those were the teams I was leaning towards. So...

    ACC: Maryland

Big East: South Florida (good like we were a few years back but then tinkled it down their leg)

    Big 10: Indiana

    Pac 10: Arizona

    SEC: Miss St.

I totally disagree with this assessment. Baylor is a smaller private school while ISU is a larger public institution. Additionally, while Baylor is in a much more populous state...the competition for athletes is far greater...UT, A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Okie State, Arkansas, LSU, etc.

Are you trying to compare based solely upon recent success (or lack thereof) of the athletic programs?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

    Re: ISU in other conferences

I don't remember Baylor winning 2 Big 12 basketball championships or going to the elite 8 (should have been a final four team). ISU has been to 4 bowl games this decade already - i don't think Baylor has been to one yet. I really don't think Baylor is even close to ISU - 3 years ago, ISU was within 2 kicks of having back to back Big 12 north titles. That is a stupid comparison.

But yes, Erik, you're right- this is a stupid comparison.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

This is true. BUT we don't play in the south. We would NEVER have been close to a south title. What is our record against south teams since starting the Big 12.

In basketball we had two sucessful years. Baylor has had one.

At the time the Big 12 North was incredibly weak. The comparison might be apt if we played a straight up Big 12 South schedule - we're 4-14 against the Big 12 south since 2002 (with 2 of those wins coming against Baylor).

This is in the football section so I doubt he was talking about the basketball differences.

I think ISU is obviously better than Baylor but we're closer to Baylor than we are to OSU, TT, or A&M.

The funny thing about all this is, prior to last year, KU was probably worse in football than us since the start of the Big 12...

No way you can compare ISU to Maryland. Maryland is usually very competitive in the ACC in both football and basketball. I would think someone more like NC State.

Or North Carolina or Duke. The ACC has a lot of crappy football teams.

    Oregon State!

    Almost identical

    very average football and basketball

best sport year in and year out = wrestling

    Strong agricultural colleges

popular among rual parts of each state

Both overshadowed by strong liberal arts schools in state

    Re: ISU in other conferences

We are very similar to Oregon State across the board... I remember when they had a shot to upset USC and that kicker missed like 3 fgs and a pat or something, it was just terrible and all I could think was that it was totally an ISU moment. Then of course, later that fall was the Mizzou-wide right by a mile kick...
