    Criticism of I-State logo

This was obviously produced awhile ago, but here is a consulting firms take on the I-State logo. Scroll about halfway down.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

Interesting take on the branding and I may have to agree with them.

I also find it interesting that we are the only team in D1 with Cyclones as our mascot and we are taking that out of our marketing and logo.

I think it is simple and marketable like the nike swoosh.

I don't think we've taken Cyclones out of our marketing...

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

Sounds like the same crap we've heard before. Create a graphic logo of a cyclone. We've done that before (twice) and neither stuck because they were either too plain or too busy. If they have a better idea, let's see it.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

We have a mascot and a name that don't really match. A Cyclone is not a cardinal. And a cardinal is not a cyclone. Doing something like K-State or Michigan like this author suggested isn't the easiest.

And a cyclone isn't a tornado so that doesn't work either.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

This critcism is fair but in the Athletic Dept.'s defense the big red (cardinal) "I" is a traditional symbol for ISU (see my 1976 helmet <- ). I would prefer to see it without the STATE written across it which I find unneccesary as we are the only "I" school in the Big XII. Also, it should be a cardinal I on a gold helmet to enhance contrast. There are indeed other "I" schools and other ISU's but I think the point is that we are trying to be THE I STATE.

That said, I do dig the old tornado symbol from the '80's and could get with it being on the helmet.

There are a lot of teams that have a unique nickname that don't display it on their helmet. Heck in our own conference I can name more than a handful: Cyclones, Cornhuskers, Sooners, Red Raiders, Jayhawks and Aggies. On top of that, you have the Tigers, Bears and Cowboys that voted against a "cartoon" on their helmet. That leaves only 3 schools that put their mascot/nickname on their helmet: Texas, KSU and Colorado.

Perhaps, but a tornado is what the Tribune meant in their story.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

I've had a lot of the same criticisms for a long time. We got stuck with a subpar logo, and when the newness wears off, people will be looking to change it yet again... That being said, the color changes and uniform changes are long overdue. It was about time that the bird in the blender on the helmet was retired. Too bad we now have an overcomplicated logo that only succeeds at being simple by being generic...

I agree with the colors part. Whether the logo holds on long term, we NEEDED to go back to cardinal as a color.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

I don't care what outsiders think of our Logo anymore. I like the new one. It is simplistic and "IState" is now claimed by us. As time goes by, there shouldn't be any confusion between other I-State Schools. Are people confused that Michigan State simply says "State". They claimed that and made it theirs. We can do the same with the I State logo.

I like it. I'm glad we didn't do the white helmets, though. The Cardinal looks great.

Cyclone used to mean tornado back in the day. When we were named the Cyclones, tornados were what they had in mind.

    Re: Criticism of I-State logo

If we win enough games and get enough exposure, then the logo issues will take care of themselves. The winged helmet of Michigan is recognizable because they are the winningest CFB program of all-time and have been on TV about a billion times in the last 20 years. All we need to do is have the same success as Michigan and our logo will be known in households around the country.

Seriously though, how many casual football fans can identify Michigan's helmet? Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 100% (my wife could pick it out of a lineup and she hates football). Now, how many of those same casual fans know that the U of Delaware has the same design on their helmet? I wonder why that is?
