These types of lists are a joke.

Urbandale was 39th on the list and now not in the top 100.

Ames wasn't on the list and is now 53rd.

Did things change that much in one year between Ames and Urbandale?

Most of the top 10 from 2007 are not even on this years list.

No way I would choose Ames over any of the burbs of DSM. I grew up in Ames and cannot stand that town. Traffic is horrible, and the pop of ames outside of ISU is so damn pretentious.

I don't put much merit in the lists either. When it all comes down to it, where you live is a matter of personal preference.

FWIW, I do love Fort Collins and if the rest of my family were closer to CO, that is where I'd be living right now.

You've hit traffic in Ames? I've lived here for 24 years and I can count on my hands how many times I've been stuck in traffic. Just need to know where to go.

    Football gamedays not withstanding.

I will have to admit that going East in the mornings and West in the evenings sucks, big time.

I drove for a couple of delivery places in college and remembering some fairly crappy traffic days. And that's even taking in account the variety of detours you can take. And may God have Mercy On Your Soul, if the train stopped at the wrong spot....

It maybe takes us 15-20 mins MAX to get out of Ames on game days. That isn't even traffic. There is no traffic in Iowa.

Trains are annoying, although there are plenty of bridges you can go under instead. But I head east to work at 8:00 and west home at 5:00 and never hit traffic. And that's on Lincoln Way.

Maybe your definition of traffic differs from mine.

I think Ames traffic is no where NEAR Ankeny or WDM. I loved Ames, but work in DSM forced us to move to Ankeny. We like Ankeny, as it's starting to offer more.

Re: Money Magazine's Best Places to Live 2008

traffic isn't anything here in ames...horrible traffic is when it takes you an hour and a half to go 15 miles to your jobsite in DC with 5 and 6 lane interstates...oh, and if it rains the night before or during the commute tack on another 30 to 45 minutes...and if it snows don't even bother trying to get to work cause they don't know what snow removal is...the one day we got 8 inches of snow out there the only people who showed up on the job were people from iowa and nebraska haha

The 2007 criteria were different from the 2008. 2007 focused on smaller cities with less than 50,000 people, while 2008 and 2006 were larger cities. If you look at the 2008 vs the 2006 lists, you will see a lot more in common between the two.

I live and work in the Johnson County suburbs of Kansas City (Overland Park #9, Olathe #11, Shawnee #39). I think it is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. However, I don't know how accurately one can rank a top 100 in the nation. The list does look at a lot of factors that people look at in considering a place to live, but those are going to change from person to person. And comparing cities from across the country some of those measures are going to be difficult to equate (ie education, number of students scoring above state average in math and reading means something different in Iowa versus Arkansas).

I would have to agree that Ames being the only Iowa city on the list is questionable. I loved the campus aspect of it and the college life it offered, but I would have no desire to live there after school. I would also place any of the Des Moines suburbs higher on the list than Ames. And in regards to traffic in Ames, I don't think it is an issue in the classic sense of congestion, but I do think it is a problem in the context of traffic flow. There are no good ways to travel through the town. Duff, Grand, Lincoln way are slow, full of stoplights, often lacking left turn lanes. I35 and highway 30 are too far on the edge of town to be practical for local travel. Basically, the road infrastructure is poorly planned and under built. And then you have a bunch of drivers who are either out of control students or locals who think they still live in a small town and they drive like it. I don't miss driving around that place one bit.

To those complaining about traffic, I have lived in Dallas and Chicago. Iowa traffic is a treat.
