Ames Trib article & Lemming's at it again...

    http://www.midiowanews.com/site/tab6...d=554517&rfi=6

Another article discussing the future coaching possibilities plus this gem...

"According to Tom Lemming of ESPN.com, Pollard just showed that person the door.

"McCarney's done the best job possible," Lemming said. "No matter who they get, they are not going to do any better than him. That's a given. The next guy is not going to go to six bowl games in six years. It is change just for change purposes, not for improving the program."

(Deep sigh) Why do the "experts" think ISU can't do better than Mac? Even if a coach comes in, does well and then moves on, he will most likely have left the program in a higher position and a better likeliehood of hiring a quality coach to replace him. I'm willing to withstand a minor coaching carosel as long as those coaches have success...

Just another sign of too many bowl games. 6-5 teams should never be invited to a bowl game IMO

Nothing like making up facts to support your own idiotic point of view. Again, I'm tired of people telling us fans what to expect. Stick to recruiting Tom. Without at least being able to recite actual facts, you've got no hope in journalism.

Great point. Walden would have gone bowling in '89 and Duncan in '80. If Mac had the same quantity of bowls as previous coaches, that number of bowls would have been lower.

Uhh -- read the quote again. It's referencing what it will take for the next guy to be BETTER than MAC. Since MAC was 5 bowls in 6 years, he's saying the next guy can't be better than MAC unless he gets 6 bowls in 6 years.

All they really do is look at the record and make their conclusions. They don't have any idea of how Mac actuallly coached.

I'd rather go to one BCS bowl game than 5 crap ones. I would say that is an improvement and a new coach may be able to take us there.

Re: Ames Trib article & Lemming's at it again...

I don't know if it can be found. But I wonder what coach has coached a team the longest while having a losing record at the D1 level. And if it is McCarney, then why is ISU dumb for moving on to a new coach? I just don't get it? Why aren't these other schools called out for firing their coach or asking for resignations? Why should our expectations be lower?

You'd think that these guys would learn that times are changing in college football. Look at Rutgers. You can win anywhere if you're a good enough coach.

Me too, but I think we all know that if the BCS game was in the fifth year, that coach wouldn't be around to see it.

Lemming is a moron. Makes me seriously question anything he ever says again other than maybe recruiting. Has he seen ISU play this year or ever? Honestly...

Because of his solid PR skills, Mac has made a lot of friends in the college football arena. However, I don't think he is much of a pure football coach. And I think that was evident to people who really paid attention to ISU football, like us, the fans! Not Lemming...

Well, that's even dumber then. If we go to the fortworth bowl six years in a row is that an improvement? I'd say not. At least Shrieveport is a better opponent. I could easily see even making the Cotton, Holiday or Alamo bowls once in a six year stretch where we only saw one or two more bowl appearances more of a success. Heck, give us a six year stretch where we make 2 bowls and get to the Big XII championship game. That would be an improvemtent. I'm not trying to belittle what Mac did at all. This is just another case of someone outside telling us what to expect. Obviously the Cotton Bowl is totally out of reach for ISU, Lemming wouldn't consider that. All he's thinking is the next guy has to get to six Shrieveports to do better. Honestly, if the next guy only gets us to six and six every year. Even if he does it 8 years in a row? I'd have to say, that's not what ISU is looking for. It's not the number of bowls, but, the quality of football on the field. It's the fact that our offense can't score and has had trouble scoring consistently since the 2000 season. My goodness, quit bashing us for wanting more success than feeding off the bottom of the barrel.

Re: Ames Trib article & Lemming's at it again...

I guess I could agree with guys like lemming if dmac was considered a coaching genius or something. If you really want to argue, you could say ISU helped make dmac the coach he was. If it was not ISU and its fans being patient with him the first 5 years, idiots like lemming wouldn't be able to say the stuff they are. I guess ISU is supposed to sit in the corner and suck their thumbs, hoping that the big bad football programs don't beat them up!
