    Game plan for tonight:

Here are my thoughts on what GMac might try tonight:

    • Jiri is out so establishing someone else in the post early will be critical. Marsden seems tentative. Ross either needs to step up early or else we try getting the ball to Cory Johnson to see what he can do down low.
    • GUARD THE 3!!! Our D has been decent through the first two exhibition games. We need to keep up that level AND add defending the 3 point line.
    • Improved shot selection. We seem to be settling some for the long shot without passing the ball around trying to find the open man. Lets run some more plays to get guys open. Run some more inside out, screens, etc.
    • Use the bench. I think Greg will try lots of different combination of players again. If Mike Taylor plays, it will be a nice relief for CM at point without trying to dump that responsibility on Dodie.
    • Control the pace of the game. Greg does this every game so I'm not really concerned here.
Anyone else have anything to add? I think we will win another tight one until this team gels a little more. We probably only score 60 and win.

    Cy,
The inside problem goes without saying but you nailed it about the perimeter defense. The first game, we got lit up from beyond the arc. If I were scouting ISU based on the first two games, I'd focus on the three but look to pound it inside when able.

Finally, yes, we need to take better shots. Shooting 30% from the field wont cut it at any level. Only our solid defense has keep us from being 0-2 in exibition play!

For those who can watch this on TV, watch the fundamentals. This is so much different than last year. I see guys boxing out after a shot. I see guys using two hands to catch and pass. Man to man D. Inside out game seems to be there. And when someone isn't doing these things, you see Greg pull the player aside and "coach" him. Great to see this once again.

I've kind of felt like we're taking our time with shots, which is great, but eating up too much of the shot clock sometimes. Anyone else get that impression?

Penetrate on offense and get to the foul line.

If they are going to penetrate and get to the line they better of practiced shooting free throws. Missing 7 in a row is just not acceptable.

Cory Johnson did a good job in the paint, but he wasn't finishing. If he can get a better touch we'll be alright.

Paul Shirley had post moves and a good shot. Marsden won't be as good as Shirley was, so I guess that could mean he's his younger brother.

I don't want anyone shooting down low besides CJ. I don't trust Ross and Jessan may still be all casted-up.

    Re: Game plan for tonight:

I honestly don't think we'll bring much more offensive firepower than last game, based on what McDermott has said so far. McDermott believes that you have to build a program on defense, ball control, and rebounding. After that, we can start worrying about the offense.

Yes, he has shown a little offensive "scheming," but I don't think we will be much better on the offensive end than last game. I do think we'll shoot a bit better percentage, but I doubt we'll rack up the score.

Funny you mention that. I've been telling my wife that I'm calling him Paul Jr.

I once read somewhere that McD has a playbook about the size of a phonebook. I imagine it takes some time to teach all the different plays, etc. We'll probably look simple at first and then get more complex later in the season.

    Re: Game plan for tonight:

I agree that we'll be much more complex on offense as the season goes on. I also think that with the quickness we have, McDermott might open up the fast break more as the season rolls along and the players get more comfortable. We'll need to use our quickness with the real lack of size we have when we hit the Big XII schedule.

he reminds me SO much of paul. good kid and probably a hard worker...just doesn't have the same talent or athleticism to take him to the next level.

speaking of paul...anyone read his blog on myspace? the guy is funny...although he takes a lot of cheap shots at the girls from isu.
