Wheee!!! We spent a good deal of time last night patching because of this. Pretty simple fix really. But if someone starts to exploit this today it could get ugly really fast out on the net.

Isn't this just a DNS server flaw? It wouldn't affect common users... Only DNS servers.

Sorry... I just realized that we always say "DNS Server", but that's like saying Domain Name Server Server...

DNS is really just wasted overhead anyway. Back when Al Gore invented the Internet, he should have had some genetic engineer alter human DNA so that we are better at memorizing and recalling numbers in the www . xxx . yyy . zzz format. Then there would be no need for DNS...

Correct, except most windows servers run a caching server by default.

Has it been confirmed that it will effect the DNS cache service? I didn't see that.

Re: Massive Internet Security Flaw Uncovered

The flaw, as I understand it, pretty much affects the entire internet that relies on DNS, which is pretty much the entire internet as most users understand it.

It's not actually a software implementation flaw, but a flaw in the actual DNS standard itself. As such, it affects pretty much every flavor of DNS server out there, and hence, affects pretty much everybody on the internet.

They aren't really releasing any details about the issue, though. Even the "fix" is supposed to be pretty hard to reverse engineer to determine the flaw.

Actually, DNS stands for Domain Name Service, so DNS Server is still fine.

Now, back when Microsoft was selling Windows NT, NT stood for New Technology and they would always say NT Technology which bugged me no end.

Though I think there are probably two different acronyms, and DNS also refers to a Domain Name Server, depending on how you're using it.

So confusingly enough, you can, IMO, say DNS or DNS Server and probably still be accurate.

clearly, that's a server without enough flair.
