Global warming is not all bad

A paper by Olivier Deschênes and Michael Greenstone examines rising temperatures and US agriculture. They concluded that temperature increases would actually increase annual U.S agricultural production — and therefore profits — by about 4 percent. Some states would be winners and other states losers but overall, climate change would be good for U.S. agriculture.

They have probably been fired, discredited and blacklisted by the PC police by now. Seriously, who can really say we had the most ideal climate 100 years ago when temps were supposedly 1.5 degrees cooler? I'd be much more concerned about a global cooling trend.

Re: Global warming is not all bad

I once spent a couple weeks getting eaten by mosquitos in North Minnesota with a group of ecologist/forestry/earth science types back in the mid-90s, and one of their biggest gripes was the effects of politics and "activists" within their field of study.

Specifically, they were concerned with the tendency of environmental activists to view the earth and nature to be a wholly static concern, which is only "upset" by the presence of man.

An earlier thread pointed out the amounts of species that went extinct, assumedly because of man. Comments like that ignore entirely that the environment is not a static system, and that extinction goes on all by itself whether man influences it.

The view of nature as static is not helpful, nor is it true. In fact, the earth should be internally cooling, but will warm or cool dependent on it's position relative to the sun. The system is simply too complex to pick one variable, monitored over a microscopic amount of cosmic time and then make sweeping predictions...

Re: Global warming is not all bad

Throughout history, warming periods have been a time of abundance for most of the world's inhabitants. Cooling periods are a time of scarcity and starvation. We have the power to affect neither.

Incidently, while we're on the topic again, I found some porn for environmentalists:

Re: Global warming is not all bad

If they are right (and that is one gigantic 'IF') about Iowa's climate becoming like Missouri or Arkansas, I will take it in a second after last winter.

I would consider warmer winters to be a good thing especially given what Natural gas and heating oil are selling for these days. I made the mistake of checking what my Natural gas charge was last month - Yikes !
