    235 MPG VW

VW plans on beginning production on a 235 mpg microcar in 2010. The sticker price is projected to be about $31,750 to $47,622.

The production capacity will be 1,000 per year, so I presume that it will only be available in Europe.

Europe has been driving small cars for a long time. I don't blame these companies for choosing them first. We are all big fans now but if gas would go down to $2/gallon you would see clowns lining up at the Hummer dealerships.

Call me a doubting Thomas, but lawnmowers do not get that good of mileage with no blades. Really, the engine would have to be improved 8 times over. Maybe 100 mpg with super duper innovation, but not 235. What is this - running it down the Rockies front slope in neutral?

    With a tail-wind, rest assured.

I don't see how this would be possible, either. But hey, a lot of things have been done through engineering and technology that were once thought to be impossible.

2 threads in the last week about good MPG cars. Hopefully it's true. I'll be positive and believe it.

    Re: 235 MPG VW

The problem is, after the US DOT and EPA get done trashing the concept (gotta "protect" us consumers, don't you know...) It'll be 10 times as large and get 2.5 gallons to the mile and cost $10 million.....

Everyone keeps talking about these great "conspiracies" that either automakers or oil companies foist off on the American people, when the US DOT and EPA routinely kill perfectly efficient and safe vehicles every day of the week, because they're not "good enough" for US highways, despite being legal to drive in every other country in the world....

I agree with you, but I do see the US DOT's purpose for scrutinizing the safety of smaller vehicles. After all, they do have to at least give the passengers some kind of chance against a 70,000 pound semi on the highways.

    Re: 235 MPG VW

It sounds as though they have thought of crash safety. In theory, a small round car like that would be easier to have roll cages and a crumple resistant frame than say a minivan. I'm not saying that getting hit by a truck won't push it around but you should be able to keep the cockpit from smashing. That along with the airbags they talked about in the article should allow a driver to walk away from a lot of damage. The car however would not survive the smallest wreck.

    Re: 235 MPG VW

I say let the car companys put it out in the market and let the consumers decide if it is safe or not for them (being realistic of course). If it is all about safety then why do they allow motorcycles on the road. Furthermore, how is that I can get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt but people riding on a motorcycle don't even have to wear a helmet.

And at 8.5 hp, it'll only take about a week to get it up to 55mph

    Great post.

You can't drive a German-spec Mercedes Benz sedan on the roads in America because it's "not safe enough" and a diesel Smart Car that gets 70 mpg because it is "environmentally unsafe".

But you can drive a home-made Harley without a helmet....

It's called the diesel engine. As Phaedrus alluded to, pretty much everyone else around the world has figured out that diesels afford great mileage for passenger vehicles, but whatever entity or combination thereof you choose to blame (EPA, auto makers, oil companies, consumer apathy) has managed to keep diesels from being a major player in the US passenger vehicle market.
