I go to the games.. I really don't care who does them on the radio.. What I cared about is drive time and listening to the Clones talk on the Radio... If 100.3 is not having a drive time guy than this announcement is very hollow to me... I will no longer listen to KXNO.. Sorry just won't happen with those 3 guys on the radio... Does anyone else feel the same way as I do about this.. Sure it's nice about 100.3 but really who cares if you go to the game...

Reality is a lot of people who are fans can't or don't make it to the games. (If they did there would be a waiting list for tickets). Having a strong signal is important for building and maintaining a fan base.

I think it is a good move in two respects, having a better signal is important, and having a flagship that will even if M&M are neutral (which we know is not true) tilts hawkeye (jon miller) is just plain embarrassing. Imagine if WHO was filled with Cyclone Fanatics and they ran ads that they were the flagship of hawkeye sports.

Give us a flagship that is at least neutral and powerful and let KXNO be just another sports radio station. Maybe if they don't think they are entitled to Cyclone support because they are the flagship they will actually work for it

The answer is no, it cannot be picked in IL (possibly near the Mississippi River but not in the heart of IL).

If them telling us 100.3 has more coverage area than 1040 WHO am, then I am sure it will reach Illinois cause WHO does. It seems that I heard once that FM signal will not reach as far as AM signal because FM projects in a straight line, so the farther away it goes, the higher it is because of the earth being a big ball, making it harder to reach the antenna of your radio while AM signals somehow can follow the contour of the earth staying within antenna's reach at much farther distance. Might be total BS, but that is what I was told so FM reaching farther than AM seems strange, but Pollard said it WILL reach all of the state of Iowa and Illinois is closer the 100.3 than say the very NW corner of the state.

I think you need to think of 100.3 as the flagship of the network. It alone won't cover Iowa, yet alone surrounding states. It alone does not have the coverage of WHO. It will give much greater coverage than KXNO did as flagship

100.3 has a broadcast radius of 76 miles.

You can check the signal strenth of KMXD for your zip code here, although it only lists zip codes getting 50+ dBu:

While I understand the motivation, I have mixed emotions about the change. Don't get wrong, I don't mind leaving KXNO, but outside of game time will we get less coverge as part of a music radio station.

There are not a lot of options at this point, particularly since I am guessing this is mid contract and we thus have to stay within the Clear Channel family. Here is the website if you are intersted.

Whenever I visit back home, I was lucky to get KXNO once I reached Pella in my car. Moving to 100.3 will be a big boost to my family who have season tickets to the home games, but don't go to the away games due to work schedules, so hearing it on the radio is the only way they get games. Kix 101 out of Marshaltown was the only way to hear it, and even then that sometimes required moving your arms just right to get the signal to the house. Coaches shows were out of the question. There will be a much larger and easier access to the clones on 100.3, and although it won't be all ISU all the time, it will bring in more fans and allow them more accessability and exposure to ISU athletics.

76 miles isn't entirely true. KMXD is essentially interference-free for between 60-75 miles from Alleman. It's been reported that the 100.3 signal can be picked up in northern Missouri and far eastern Iowa. I can get about 100 miles from Ames to the NW before the signal starts to diminish.

I think this change is a great thing, especially for events at night. There are spots in Ames that I can't get KXnO...in my car...during the day! At night, forget about it! Now, with a powerful FM station that isn't forced to power down at sunset, a much larger area will be able to hear the nighttime FB and MBB games.

Deace said on his noon broadcast on WHO that 100.3 is another sister station to WHO. I hope that don't come and bite us again...

Does your radius account for 106.7? "The Bus" broadcasts on both of those frequencies.

It's all part of the clear channel family, so I don't know that we really dropped KXNO vs. convinced clear channel to give ISU a greater coverage area.

As long as we get it in southern Iowa, I'll be happy. I was growing tired of having to hold my radio a certain way to listen to games.
