    Nocturnal Leg Cramps

Does anyone else here struggle with these?

I have been battling with them night in-night out for a good 6 months now. I have tried a couple cups of water before bed, stretching, vitamins, but still cannot shake em'.

I'm a frequent runner which probably does not help.

My dad fought them for a long time. He wound up taking potassium tablets and eating bananas at bed time.

    That seemed to help.

    Re: Nocturnal Leg Cramps

I get charlie horses in my calves a couple of times a year. The worst it ever got for me was having both calves cramp up at the same time. (marching band)

These days I use a foam tube to help with my stretches. Have you tried that? My trainer showed how to use these firm foam tubes to stretch out my calves, back, neck, quads, etc. It does hurt at first, but it is worth it.

I've had a few of those in my life. They seemed to come after I did something odd like stand all day. I have no suggestions, just sympathy.

    Re: Nocturnal Leg Cramps

I get them so bad that sometimes it hurts to walk the next day, sometimes the following day as well. Got a cramp in my calf so bad last night that I thought (at the time) that it also pulled the quad as well. Not fun...

Calcium helps a lot. Drink a big glass of milk in the evening, that helps me get rid of muscle cramps from running. Or eat a bowl of cereal before bed.

    Re: Nocturnal Leg Cramps

I really struggled with those through high school and even through my first couple years here. They were always happening to me in that period right as you wake up, where you leave deep REM sleep and are aware of what's going on around you, but are still actually asleep. When I was in that light sleep, I would try and stretch or flex my legs, and the muscles would lock up badly. I just had to train myself to recognize when I was in that stage of sleep and fight the temptation to stretch until I was fully awake. Since then, I basically never get them. I know it's not a succinct answer like "eat a banana" but it was a valuable discovery for me; hopefully it'll help you too.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    Re: Nocturnal Leg Cramps

At different times in my life I will go through about a week of that crap waking up with your calves cramping up so bad it about made me weep. I have learned that when it first happens I will eat banana's during the day and take a couple potassium pills at night and I haven't had a bad cramp in quite a while now. Hope it helps ya

    Good luck....

I use to get them all the time. I found when I graduated college and rarely drank over 12 hours a day, they went away pretty fast.

    Re: Nocturnal Leg Cramps

Potassium helps with cramps, and bananas are high in potassium. So either postassium supplements, a multivitamin high in potassium (check the label, not all have the same levels) or bananas. Frankly, I recommend the latter, more natural option.

As some people have mentioned here, heavy exercise (or drinking) can reduce the proper balance in your legs. And damn, yes, that was agony, rolling out off a deep sleep and suddenly trying to strectch out both calves. I was glad I slept alone, so there was no one to hear me whimpering.

So you don't get leg cramps if you drink less than 12 hours per day?
