Friday I was at the DM art's festival meeting my wife who was working at a 'non-profit' booth. While I was there I walked past the WHO-TV tent where I spotted Andy Fales, before I could approach him he took off around the table to head off to talk or do something. He happened to walk by me and I said "Hey Andy." I said I watched Sports Soundoff and that I was glad he was back in DM. He asked me my name and and shook my hand.
The reason I write this is because he stopped what he was doing, looked me in the eye, and listened to what I had to say. In my experience that's unusual for most people in his position to treat people like that. So I just wanted everyone to know that inspite of the "What's bugging Andy" rants he does from time to time he's seems like a good guy. Maybe no one care, but just wanted to say something. I think we are fortunate to have people like that serve our community. Thanks Andy.
I saw him Saturday morning cruisin the farmers market downtown in a Cardinals shirt. Hes a good guy to have around. Now if he could just drop a "boom goes the dynamite"... every once in a while, he'd be legendary.
Couple years ago we caught a 12:15 I-Cubs game and he was shooting some footage from the RF bleachers. Started packing up his camera and said "I'm calling it, 2 run homer coming up here." Someone asked him why he was calling that and he said the 1 time they I-Cubs had ever hit back to back to back homers he had packed up and was in the john when it happened so he just expects a big play to happen whenever he packs up the gear after that happened.
I remember watching Andy on the news one night during his "sabbatical" in Kansas City. It was painful. He was all serious, just being another sports guy. It was like aliens abducted him and took over his body. It had to be twice as painful for him as it was for me.
I've never seen anyone look so much like a fish out of water as he was down there. The station management who hired him should have known that his personality would not be a good fit for that dull, mundane sports department. Hopefully he got more money when he came back.
He is my next door neighbor. Good guy. He was pretty proud of his Bulldogs this past season.
He likes working with Murph and I can't imagine not liking to work with that guy. I can't imagine there is ever a dull moment when they are working on soundoff. I think Hassel (sp?) does a pretty good job too and him singing theme songs of their sponsors after soundoff was classic.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
