    Direct TV

I'm making the switch from Mediacom to Direct TV this week. I'm trying to decide on which package to go to. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Right now with Mediacom I have HBO just for Entourage. I do have an HD TV which is a main reason I am switching.

If you've got Direct TV is there a package you would recommend?

I have the everything package, all the movie channels, all the sports channels plus MLB extra Innings and MLB super fan.

If you want to spend a bunch of money, get what I have.

I do enjoy getting all the channels.

    Re: Direct TV

The total choice package is like $55-60 a month and has alot. Too many channels for me. You also get the versus and Fox sports regional channels which I bet we will be on a time or two come football season. Tell them your thinking about some movie channels and ask if there is a spcial discount for trials. They should give you some options such as Starz for a couple bucks a month. I've done this alot with their movie and sports channels. It works!!

    Re: Direct TV

The nice thing about DirecTV is you can cancel and or signup for HBO or SHOWTIME etc in seconds. We only have HBO while Entourage is on or Dexter and a few other shows are on Showtime.

    Re: Direct TV

Just make sure you tell them you want the HD package. It's like 5 bucks more but then you get all the extra HD channels instead of the standard ones.

    Re: Direct TV

I need to decide between Direct TV and Dish.

Are there any significant differences between the basic packages for the two different companies?

    Re: Direct TV

Yes DiercTV has the NFL sunday Ticket which no one else has. That is the primary reason I got it in the first place and have been suprised by the amount of programming. If I am not mistaken they currently have more HD channels as well. I have had very few problems with the service and any time I need customer support they have very easy to deal with. As far as dish is concerned my sister has it but I can't say I have heard her say anything about the service either positive or negative. If you are an NFL fan with an out of region team there is not choice DirecTV is it.

    Re: Direct TV

Directv is usually more expensive but has better channels IMO. Here is what I would do.

#1 Start out with a package like total choice or CHOICE XTRA / PLUS DVR / PLUS HD DVR. It's not the biggest package but you always can upgrade later without breaking your contract. It's harder to downgrade once you sign the contract.

#2 If you think there is any chance you'd like a DVR and HD than get an HR21(HD DVR) NOW before you sign the contract. Once you sign the contract you'll be paying full price for each additional receiver.

#3 Get all the receivers you want now. Adding them later will be $$$.

Here is an HD comparison between the 2. I don;t know if it's up to dat.

    Re: Direct TV

I don't think it makes since to get anything, but the Plus HD DVR Package. If you are going HD it cost $10 more anyway so why not throw in the HD DVR box also.
This is regularly $72.99/mo. - Don't buy a package based on some promotion because it will end and then you will have to pay full price for it. (unless you plan on switching to a lower tier)
What people fail to realize is that there are other TV's in most houses that don't want to be on the same box. That cost $5 more a month per box.
So if this was my house I would be $73 + 15(additional receivers) = $88
This gets you no Premium channels though. I think you can get everything they offer for $120 (that would be One HD DVR Box with HD/DVR service) - No internet or phone included. I could be wrong on some of this, but that is they way I see it online and from a guy that was trying to sell it from me.

    This helps a lot. Thanks,
But, is the Total choice an old package or something? All I see is
FAMILY (29.99) This package is horrible.
    CHOICE (52.99)
    CHOICEM XTRA: (57.99)
    PLUS DVR: (62.99)
    CHOICE XTRA + HD: (67.99)
    PLUS DVR / HD (72.99)
PREIMER (104.99) -still need to buy dvr and hd service on top of this.

EDIT: Thanks. Plus DVR/HD is the package that would be my choice with a couple extra boxes.

    Re: Direct TV

I just attempted to get set up with DirecTV and had nothing but problems. Installer never showed, called install company and got treated rudely and then hung up on, directv didn't seem to care about this, gave me the On-Time guarantee, but as I told them that doesn't cover me having been rude to and hung up on. I told them to take a flying leap, stuck with mediacom.

Got 2 hd dvr boxes, starz, extra digital channels and internet for $99/month with no promotions. I've not had rude service from mediacom in the past 5 years so I'll stick with them.

I'll miss out on some HD channels. But I'll still get all the locals as well as ESPN and ESPN 2 and I think like TNT, TBS and a few others for now.

    Re: Direct TV

Couple more questions. Direct TV doesn't have Dual DVR boxes do they? I really like that feature.

Also. How much of a pain is it to get a UHF remote setup on a Direct box.?

    Re: Direct TV

I recently returned to Des Moines from the desert of southern California. While there, I had Time Warner cable. It is light years better tham Mediacom. While there, I moved into a home for which TW had not yet installed the trunk into the community, so I had to go with DirectTV. It cost me $300 for an HD receiver, and I couldn't get local channels and had to pay an extra $1.50 per month per channel to get the LA local channels.

Although the service and quality was very good with DirectTV - and I'd take DirectTV over Mediacom, cable providers in other areas of the country kick BOTH Mediacom and DirectTV.

Not an answer for you, but if I was starting from scratch in Des Moines, I'd take DirectTV as long as the local channels are provided.

If you're talking about dual tuner, yes they do. HR21 HD dvr.
