How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

The LA Times has a story on the impact of $200 oil.

Besides the obvious effect $7-a-gallon gasoline would have on commuters, automakers, airlines, truckers and shipping firms, $200 oil would drive up the price of a broad spectrum of products: Insecticides and hand lotions, cosmetics and food preservatives, shaving cream and rubber cement, plastic bottles and crayons -- all have ingredients derived from oil.

With every penny hike in the price of gas costing American consumers about $1 billion a year, sharply higher pump prices would lead to "significant bankruptcies and store closings," said Scott Hoyt, director of consumer economics at Moody's Economy.com.

Nationwide, $200 oil and $7 gasoline would force Americans to take 10 million vehicles off the roads over the next four years, Jeff Rubin, chief economist at CIBC World Markets, wrote in a recent report.

Have you ever seen MadMax and the Thunderdome (sp?). That's what would happen to America. This is a disaster.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

Personally, I can't drive any less than I already do. I'm at less than 100 miles a week, less than 5,000 per year.

The prices of ALL products would go up (they already are), not just the ones that are derived from oil. Everything has to be shipped somehow.

Like he said, it'd be like Mad Max. We're slaves to the countries we rely on for oil right now, and its gotta change.

Don't forget our food costs are up because it is so expensive to transport it.

When will someone come up with a cost effective replacement for the combustion engine? Pretty soon the car makers and oil companies will have to be dealt with for the betterment of humanity. We have smart people on this planet, there is no reason they cant do it.I saw McCain was for giving out $300 million to some that can, but why not really make it worth their wild, like a billion. $300 million would probably barely cover research.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

How about the Federal Reserve gets their head out of their *** and do something about it. Supply and Demand took oil to $70 last year....Then the sub prime crisis came into play and Mr. Bernake aka Mr. Clueless decided to bail out the financial industry for being greedy. He lowers interest rates at such a rate that it sends the value of the US dollar into the s*****. If he would not have done that Oil would still be at $70-80.

Plus we need to get the speculators out of the oil pits, the hedge funds are ****** becaue they did not make any money last year and now they can just throw billions into the oil market and turn into their own little piggy bank. You have traders admitting this on TV that they are just bouncing oil back and forth between $130-140. They predict that the speculators have added about $30-40 to the price of oil.

Lets face it our government is letting us down across the board - until we stand up and do something about it, it is going to continue.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

I'd adjust to it and live just fine. You'd see me driving a large car with a small 4 cylinder engine. I'd probably take less trips to see the inlaws. I'd spend more time at my local town. I'd tend to shop local. I'd probaby have a bigger garden and try to grow more of my own food.

I'd try to buy more products with less oil in it. Plastics, glues, hand lotions derived from Soy or Corn oil may become a more economic purchase.

People lived just fine before the advent of oil and we'll learn to again. Also we have some good alternatives like Ethanol, Hydrogen and Nuclear which can produce a lot of energy. Nuclear is by far the cheapest and cleanest form of energy to produce if this country could get over Three Mile island.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

The whole borrowing trillions of dollars from China, because we don't actually have any money to pay for that farce of a war in Iraq, isn't exactly helping the value of our dollar, either.

I hate the fact that there aren't any politicians heading towards the White House who recognize this..

But I agree, about the 300 million prize... that isn't actually going to entice anyone or any company. That's the thing I hate about incentives for the scientific community from politicians... they don't get it. They don't actually understand anything that's going on, and apparently have crappy advisers, so they don't actually incite anyone to do anything. The scientific community is run by big corporations nowadays, not individuals! To get them to do something, either the market has to stop buying their products, the government has to force them to stop doing something, or someone has to give them TONS of money to do it!

I may grow the brass ones that it would take to ride a cycle on West Lake Houston and Beltway 8...... on second thought I think I'll keep paying for gas.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

I'd probably start carpooling with my husband for my 5 miles to work. Wear less makeup, buy less crap, go out less. I'm within walking distance of a grocery store and a bunch of cheap restaurants, so we'd probably just walk to these places if we felt we had to.
Luckily I have a very fuel efficient car and don't have far to go. One tank of gas can last me up to 2 weeks.

Re: How would $200 a barrel oil change your life?

If it goes $200, 20k miles driving per year for 1300 gallons of petrol usage/yr means $2000 more out of pocket ($1.50 gas price rise from here) to move your vehicles and price of goods delivered to stored that impact you may approximate $1500 more (lots of inflation headed this way), means you better net $3500 more with your payraise or gross $5-6k more to cover the taxes and the shock.

Looks like fewer sports events, fewer nights at the opera, fewer Rollin Stones concerts, less clothing, less charity giving, less food, fewer restaurants, big item ticket deferral, more govt blaming, more Arab envy, more lottery gambling. President Obama will fix it with hope.....
