    Who has a hybrid???

My wife and are in the market for a new vehicle and are looking at the Ford Escape Hybrid. Does anyone actually own a hybrid? What kind of experience have you had owning one?

    Re: Who has a hybrid???

I'm not sure if this is common or not, but I am working a claim right now where the hybrid didn't respond quickly to the accelerator. The driver pressed down on the pedal and the car hesitated before picking up. I've been told that this can be common, but I don't have anything concrete to back it up.

I own an Escape Hybrid and I absolutely love it! Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to try and convince a fellow Cyclone fan to join the Escape Club! LOL!

My main questions are around power, maintenance, problems assiocated with the hybrid system, etc.

    Re: Who has a hybrid???

I'd look into this really close and see if the hybrid model you're eying really makes sense. Some of them really are not any better at all in city driving.

That technology is still in somewhat of an infant stage - I'm not convinced the "bugs" are worked out yet.

Cy Heavy has a Camry hybrid - he told me about it in another thread. You'll want to talk to him, he was a wealth of info.

Power so far has been good. I've had mine for a little over 2 months now. You can't do any drag racing with the bad boy, but it'll get you where you are going. Since I've had it only two months I haven't had that much maintenance on it yet. I did have to have the front passenger side window replaced after some jerk threw a rock and it and cracked the HECK out of it. I haven't had any problems with the hybrid system yet. When I bought it, my dealer did tell me that every other oil change I need to flush out the system with a mixture of water and this special cleaner stuff. It sounded kind of fishy to me but I haven't had time to do much checking into it. If you want answers to more "specific" questions, let me know here or PM me.

I think it gets 26 city/ 32 highway. We do mostly highway driving because we live in the country and our offices are close to the interstates. I am torn on the whole thing. The mileage is better, but not SIGNIFICANTLY better than what you can get with a standard CR-V etc.

What you feel is the delay in the second power alternative kicking in. Needs to build up momentum.

    Re: Who has a hybrid???

My parents just finished buying up a new car and were considering a Civic hybrid. The thing that turned them off was that, as has been stated, the technology is in its infancy, and if there's a problem with the battery, it would run around $3500 to replace it.

This is true about the battery. That was one of my concerns, but it didn't stop me since I have a lot of disposable income.

Yeah, my Altima gets that. Then again, I'm not comparing apples to apples there.

But our Murano isn't a gas hog and IMO - I'd take it over most (if not all) SUV hybrids that are out today.

    Re: Who has a hybrid???

I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid. I've had it for about a year, and I like it a lot. I don't know how much power you want, but I've never felt short of power driving my kids around town. Maintenance is exactly like any other car so far, although if I have any problems with the electrical system it will have to be serviced at the dealer. Hybrids use a lot of new technology, so they're vulnerable to unforeseen problems. Hybrids have been around for about ten years now so hopefully they've ironed out a lot of kinks, but Ford is new to this so they may have some issues.

How much highway driving do you do? Hybrids are great for city driving (I get close to 30 mpg). On the highway, their milage is almost the same as a gas powered car. If most of your driving is on the highway, I wouldn't bother with a hybrid.

You can drive a hybrid just like any other car. To maximize mileage, though, you have to drive a little differently. You have to pay attention to the car and find the sweet spot where you're driving as fast as you can without the gas engine turning on. I'm also constantly fiddling with the AC and heat settings so my gas engine doesn't run at stoplights. Also, my mileage goes way down in winter as the gas engine has to run more just to stay warm.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Escape hybrid, but I've also heard the waiting list is months long. I've also heard most dealers charge a premium, maybe $4-5000 above sticker price.
