Denver Post Article on the State of the Big 12

    Check this link and comment...

    http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_4621093

The guy is going to be obviously pro-CU and he takes a nasty pot-shot or three at ISU. But...his point is that the South is dominating in football (which creates most of the money for a majority of the Big 12 schools) and you could make the case for the South dominating in basketball too (Kansas is the exception...always will be). OK, TX, aTm, even Tech with Bob Knight should never be counted out.

So what to do, or how to proceed? I think Stoops has a great idea (think K State in '98) but I have a feeling that there has to be more. I know that there have been some rumors out there about ISU going to the MAC or a smaller conference, or even Mizzou to the Big 10 but those to me, at least right now, seem unsubstantiated. We all know that college sports depend on kids aged 18-23 so things will be somewhat cyclic. But like the OSU's, Notre Dame's, USC, Michigans, and even Penn States, once you are good or reach an elite level, you tend to stay there. That's what is sorta scary about TX and OK being where they are and where they are going.

There are lots of pros and cons against all of this, and I don't want to see us get out of the Big 12, but something has to be done...any thoughts?

I do not want to leave for a mid major, that would be absolutely terrible for ISU! I personally want to join the Big 10. But alot of people are opposed to that idea...

Especially Hawk fans. These rumors linking ISU to Big 10 stem from Utah's rumored desire to join B12. This rumor has been out there for at least 2 years. There are arguments from our Hawk friends that ISU is no fit for the big 10 for academic reasons, but those arguements are easily refuteable. A better arguement is it wouldn't add any market to the big 10 as far as TV viewers. They already have the state due to Iowa.

With that said, I agree, I think ISU in the big 10 would benefit the school. (I can already see rep points going doowwwwnnnn) More TV money, better bowl packages (look at Iowa last year!!) etc.

I'm with you 100% herbicide, don't worry about your rep!! No one can deny its better for the school in general. The big 10 is much more stable and the bowl package are much better! We would of played in a Jan bowl game last year!!!!

I think we could benefit by being in the Big 10.

Re: Denver Post Article on the State of the Big 12

Good article and I don't think the guy was that hard on ISU.

Stoops has a good idea. Get rid of the championship as it appears to be harmful to pretty much everybody involved.

ISU to the Mac? Oh come on. We'd be the 900 pound gorrila in that conference. I say a better option would be to go back to the Big 8 or perhaps try to get into the Big 10(the conference that can't count).

Execpt the pocketbooks of all 12 schools in the conference. Its almost like an extra BCS bowl in terms of revenue.

The Big 12 will never get rid of the championship game because it would take away too much $$$ from the conference. The North will come around again eventually, just watch.

Umm, of course Stoops is opposed to the title game. Remember him getting waxed by KSU, undeservedly going to the Title game, and getting waxed there too? Tough to justify it at that point.

Re: Denver Post Article on the State of the Big 12

Screw that guy. the north will have its day. If it takes 10-15 years then so be it. You put us in a conference filled with softies then we will always be softies. Its our struggle that makes us special. When we hit our stride and start winning against tough opponents it will raise eyebrows and we will get our due credit. If we play bad teams all the time and win we will always be known as the team that has it easy. i am proud to be in the big 12. its a power conference.

Re: Denver Post Article on the State of the Big 12

If there was ever a chance to join the Big 10, that is just one more reason to spend all this money on stadium renovations. Almost all Big 10 stadiums (except Northwestern) are huge. Our stadium would be a joke in the Big 10.

Re: Denver Post Article on the State of the Big 12

I think this year will be different. Nebraska had Texas beat this year in Lincoln. The game in KC will almost be a home game for them. They will at least compete with the South's representative (Texas) which is more than I can say for Colorado. The North will come around, but it will take some time. We have to face the facts this year, the Big 12 isn't that good. We'll be back.

Don't look at just ISU. I could say the same thing about Baylor or Kansas State. Are we going to move everybody that has losing records to some mid major conference? I think these are just talks without facts. I see ISU staying in big 12 all the way.

Go to the US Census website and check out where the majority of the US population growth is going to be in the next 30 years. It's in Texas, not in the Big 10 states. That population growth is not just due to immigration, it's also do to companies moving to Texas because of the favorable business climate.

It might look good now to join the Big 10, but in the long run I don't think so. ISU needs to stay in the Big 12, work with the other schools to better the TV deal, implement a revenue sharing plan, and strengthen the recruiting ties to Texas. Down here, there are a growing number of (and will be for many years to come) 1) good athletes to go around, and 2) TV sets to watch Big 12 games.
