    Win now or Rebuild?

With a new coach coming in what are your expectations? How much time does he get to get us back to a Bowl or do you want a bowl next year? Hey Brett and Todd are coming back!! I really don't think anyone is going to wait 5 years like we did with Mac....

    Re: Win now or Rebuild?

That's what somewhat sickens me (but not totally). DMac's numbers, career wise, are way less than stellar but he has brought goodness to ISU football. How long does a new coach get, and if say he gets only 5 years, who, as a coach, is going to want to come here if he knows that he only has 5 years to do something with it? That's only one complete recruiting class...

I guess I'm just apprehensive of where this all is going. Of course there will be divisions within Cyclone Nation about how all this plays out, but what about considering how long JP stays here, and how his "stamp" on these programs is going to affect us down the road? Bottom line is that we don't know but we sure can speculate...

With a new coach in college football, you have to give him at least 3 to 4 years. In this day and age, it is irresponsible, and frankly, just plain stupid, to fire a coach before their first recruiting class has a chance to become seniors.

Perfect example: Wisconsin. I don't think anybody will disagree that Barry Alvarez is (at the least) a good coach who turned that program around.

Alvarez is hired for the 1990 season
    1990: 1-10
    1991: 5-6
    1992: 5-6
    1993: 10-1-1 *Rose Bowl*

Since then, UW's been a contender almost every year. Is this the timetable we should be expecting? No. I'm simply citing an example of why you need to wait a couple of years for a coach's system (and the players he needs to be successful in that system) to develop. Sometimes it takes less time, sometimes it takes more. It's one of the most painful waiting games we have to play.

Considering that Mac received little or no pressure in 12 years I would argue that the new coach will be afforded the same.

It won't be any more painful than watching this year unravel. Bring on the new coach. I'd gladly sit through 3 or 4 years of crap if I knew that 10 wins was lurking around the corner.

    Re: Win now or Rebuild?

Let's face it, we have to rebuild. The state of the program isn't such that a quick turnaround is possible. You could raise Lombardi from the dead and he probably couldn't take a team with this offensive line to a bowl game next year.

Although, Mike Price did a heck of a job turning around UTEP...

    Re: Win now or Rebuild?

Actually Dan is leaving the program in much better shape than when he came here. The closet is not bare and we have some talent.

However we lose a lot of Offensive lineman to graduation(that may not be all bad.) and a few good D Lineman. Also not sure what the fall out will be for transfers with a new coach coming in.

With the tough part of the Big 12 South in the picture again next year, I woudn't expect too much. The 2008 season should be better and I expect the guy to get us to at least 6 or 7 wins that year.

    Re: Win now or Rebuild?

I know we are far from deep at most positions, but there are still some very talented players on the team! I don't expect a 10 win season next year, but i still think we should be competative, especially against the big 12 north teams.

Well when you look at next years upcoming opponents...next year is going to be a tough one which is sad to see w/ todd and brett back but then we have 2 years with a better schedule...so i see year 2 being a great year at least a bowl and everyone will be happy and this will all be forgotten

I hope so. And then the year after that, maybe we'll have the guys in place to knock off OU or UT.

    Maybe I'll be suprised....

ANY CONFERENCE RECORD UNDER A NEW COACH NEXT YEAR WILL BE BETTER THAN WHAT COACH MAC PRODUCED THIS YEAR!!!

    Re: Win now or Rebuild?

The truth is ISU will have to go through rebuilding stage. Hopefully it won't last too long, but Mac isn't leaving much in the kitchen. He's leaving Meyer and Blythe (only for 1 year), couple good linebackers, couple kickers, and an experienced secondary (not good but experienced). They have a chance to compete for a bowl game next year. A slim one but a chance still. Hopefully the new coach can perform some McDermott like miracles when it comes to recruiting because it doesn't look like there is really anything special coming in this year and there isn't a whole lot on the depth chart either.
