Re: Getting into Iowa City from the EAST, Illinois.

I live east of Iowa City and a friend of mine works for a funeral home. He had to go to Iowa City to pick up someone who had passed away.

They made him go to Dubuque, take Highway 20 until I-35, go down to Des Moines, and then take I-80 East. I don't know if that's still the detour, but that's awful.

I would suggest going into Burlington on Hwy 34, than take Hwy 218 up to Iowa City. Looks like everything is open in Iowa on that route...

That is brutal. Is that the best way to Ames too right now?

Unfortunately, that's still quite a haul. Also, from what I heard on the news this morning (KWQC-Davenport) is that Burlington is starting to see the affects from the flooding from the Iowa and Cedar Rivers. While the US 34 bridge in Burlington shouldn't itself be affected (it's pretty tall), Burlington is expecting to see record flooding and it sounds like they want to limit traffic on that bridge. Could be why they still want to send traffic up and around on US 61/US 20/I-35 - those are all 4-lane highways that were designed to handle heavier traffic.

I'm pretty sure. At least with that route to Ames, you don't have to go way the hell in the wrong direction.

The Illinois side of the river is where you'll have the problems at Burlington. That side of the river is pretty low.

Awful both in terms of distance (miles and time) and the large number of trucks on highway 20. The road can get pretty narrow in places, although it's worse on the Illinois side of the river. We did it yesterday. Pretty country in the Dubuque area if you want to look for the bright side.

I'm from Dubuque, and it is neat to see the fall foliage along the river and bluffs. If you guys are in the area mid October, I would highly recommend it. It is definitely a unique area for the state of Iowa, lots of history in that town too.
