A focal point of this recruiting season was 174, which could be solved immediately by 2x NCAA qualifier Duke Burk, and then in the future by either Spangler or Shafer. The wild card of this class is Valles. If he can stay healthy he will be a steal.

Awesome to see both Iowa and ISU pick up top 10 classes. Very solid.

I was semi-surprised to see Rutgers up that high. Hopefully they start to emerge on the national scene even more.

Is this ranking up from other years? Showing a positive direction with the program?

Re: #8 Recruiting Class in Nation

The last class that was this highly touted was the class of Varner, Fanthorpe, Gallick, Mueller, and Sanderson.

Cael has done a good job of recruiting with 9.9 scholarships between the years.

Minnesota, this year's #1 class, was the #1 class 5 years ago. Reiter, Kish, CP Schlatter, Koz, and Dretsch. Now that all of their scholarships are gone, Minnesota was able to bring in the best class again.

Look for another big class of recruits when Varner's class graduates.

Re: #8 Recruiting Class in Nation

I consider Cael's # 8 recruiting class more along the lines of one that will ultimately be looked at as a top 2 or 3 class when its all said and done. There are other classes that will have higher "stars" or rankings but nobody is going to get more from their guys than Cael and you could also argue that there is no better judge of talent. Obviously I'm highly bias but I sincerely think Cael has some unique talents that are really going to bring out the absolute best in every athlete.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Well said, i've been thinking the same thing. He has picked up a lot of potential, gonna be a fun time to watch wrestling.

I like the the point you made. I was reluctant to even ask the question in the first place as we all know the recruiting rankings don't make squat, but I was curious to know how it stacked up to his other classes. I really wish I could stay more up on wrestling as I enjoy it greatly.

Thanks for the updates and input from everyone.

Re: #8 Recruiting Class in Nation

My uncle used to be boyhood friends with Harold Nichols son and as my uncle put it, one of the biggest recruitment draws in wrestling is the opportunity to practice with the 'best'. To be a better wrestler you have to go toe to toe with the best athletes in the sport. If that's true (I'm not a wrestler) than I would say having the best wrestler in the history of the sport as coach is going to be a powerful recruitment tool, if not development tool. I think we're set at Iowa State.

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''

Most would look at a 8 or 9 recruiting class as a dissappointment but with cael showing these guys the way i would have no fear that his recruits are great and make this team national championship contender year in and year out.

That is entirely true. The guys we have, and are recruiting now (at the upper weights) want to wrestle him. From all accounts I've seen, they want and love wrestling Cael, the Paulsons, and Caels middle brother on staff. They're all fantastic wrestlers. Also, as an amateur at the High School level, wrestling against my coach, who was an Iowa stat place-winner, was the top of the achievement chain in the practice room. You always want to go against the best/those better than you in order to learn.

If anyone looks at at 8 or 9 man class in wrestling and scoffs is either an idiot, or there's some bad coaching going on at that school. By the way, there isn't some bad coaching going on in Ames on the mat.

What i was trying to say is that ISU has a top 5(should have been top 2) wrestling program and some people might look at a #8 recruiting as below the level ISU is capable of. When ISU finishes in the top 5 a lot of people might expect a top 5 recruiting class. 8 to 5 is not a large gap even 8 to 1.

With cael matside i think a lot of people would expect #1 class every year but that just doesnt happen. No one ever emplied that there was any bad coaching on an ISU wrestling mat.

Cowboycurtis, I'm not sure how much you follow wrestling, which is why I made my statement. It seems like the wrestling fans are few and far between. I've seen a lot of dumb statements made about our program, or about other wrestling programs that were made out of ignorance. It seems like you're a follower, and I applaud you for that. The more wrestling fans there are, the better.

A lot of top programs have ignorant followers(wrestling, football, whatever). Always wanting #1 and as soon as that doesnt happen they bail or bad mouth.

Not to change the subject but a Gold membership in the National Cyclone club makes you able to get 2 free tickets when seating is available for all ISU olympic sports....Volleyball, gymnastics and WRESTLING. I haven't been a regular wrestling meet attendee, as season mens and women's BB tickets too, only a few wrestling meets could be worked in. last yr the meet I had front row seats to was an ice storm cancelled trip for me.

Free tickets to any home meet are a huge bonus for being a Gold and above NCC member. I plan to see more meets now I have officially retired.

Re: #8 Recruiting Class in Nation

We really can't put to much stock in our "recruiting class rank" Cael knows how to pick good kids that are mentally tough and will excel to their potential. I've seen lots of kids that were 3 or 4x state champs that didn't do squat in college. Jeff Kerber and Scott Morningstar to name a few, for those of you old enough to remember those names.

If we get top 5 or 10 recruiting classes every year (which we will) we'll have the raw talent......and Cael will do the rest.

If anybody has the time or info....I'd like to see the correlation between National tourney placings vs. recruiting class ranking over the years.
