Is it fair to have some doubts about McD at this point? - PART 2

Just saw that someone posted today to URBCLONE's original comment of May 19. Just curious how opinions about Mac might contrast from the time of Wes's announcement and today.

Everyone pretty much of the same opinion now as then? Has the panic/concerns of some lessened with the passage of time?

Allow me to offer my take: Greg is a quality individual, possesses a sharp basketball mind, and simultaneously must labor extraordinarily hard to lift ISU basketball from a dark place while adjusting to and learning about Big 12 basketball. He's a good man, a moral man of high principle and is ideal for ISU. I have unshakable faith in his ability to get the job done. But, that's just me. . . .

I'm am worried about his ability to continually recruit and retain the type of player it takes to win at the Big 12 level. It has been my concern all along and hasn't change because of Wesley Johnson.

ISU BB will be ok under the leadership if McD. Having doubts and questions is ok and understandable but he will get it done.

Remember his underrated kids had no trouble beating us a few times. Those were not Brackins, Diante, or Buck level players. However, they bought into the system and were smart players.

I see this referred to quite a bit.

Just because his UNI teams beat our teams doesn't mean squat.

Greg will get her done...Ok for to doubt anybody, but premature to do so with Greg.

These kind of threads are silly and a sign of how slow sports news is right now.

Didn't UNI only beat us once while he was there?

Re: Is it fair to have some doubts about McD at this point? - PART 2

Can we please stop this debate. All summer, if McD can't get so, and so, he can't recruit....he got those recruits many nay sayers said he had to get to prove he can recruit....yet still, the arguments about whether or not he can recruit. Quite frankly, I think a good team of medium good recruits is better these days than the "stars" who leave early, transfer, cause problems because they think they should start as a freshmen, and not have to do the work coaches want. Jake Sullivan had a good argument in his interview on the DSM register about playing basketball and running plays, etc. vs. premiere athletes. Look at Fennelly and how well he does with good players who run schemes. I think McD is similar in that approach. Replacing McD....boy, there is an exercise in futility....what donor is going to step up and enodow a million dollar salary so we can get a prime time coach, who will still flee if a bigger name school knocks on the door. We need a coach who is faithful to what makes Iowa, Iowa and is proud to be a Cyclone, not someone who is on a career path.

Anyway, I want the team to be successful, but I would rather root for a team I respect, players I respect than is middle of the pack, than a top-team of self-centered pre-madonnas.

ISU also doesn't need to bring in someone who will sell his soul(Sampson) to get recruits, and I expect there are many out there like him who just haven't been caught. That is the last thing ISU needs.

And, even if McD doesn't produce a tourney ready team in the next couple years, if he brings stability, that is progress, which if a new coach is what we need at that point, will be much easier to transition, and much easier to hire for than a troubled team.
