    Iowa City Needs Help

There is a call for sandbaggers in Iowa City. The river has reached the 1993 record and will not crest until Tuesday or Wednesday at a level 5 feet above 1993. Because of the reservoir, the fllod waters take longer to crest but they also take longer to leave. The expectation is that the water level will remain above the 1993 record for well over a week (with no additional rain).

    They need our help!

Attached are a couple of links that provide specifics about what is going on in Iowa City.

Can we go down and funnel the waters to kinnick and carver? I'd help with that.

I think carver is pretty high up. It better be because its fricking underground. The whole arena would fill up.

Seriously dude, there is a time to joke and this isn't one of them. This is a very serious situation they are facing, so can't we just put the rivalry aside for once.

How would you fell if your house was about to go underwater but someone makes a joke about flooding Hilton or JTS?

I'm not quite sure you appreciate the severity of the situation.

The problem is you can barely get to IA city from the east, and with I-80 closed will they allow you to travel I-80 to get to IA city from the west?

    Re: Iowa City Needs Help

About sandbagging: To any newbies that want to help but don't think they can. While you need strong backs to shovel sand and move the bags, you also need people to hold the bags open and tie them shut. That is far less "physical" and we had kids and retirees helping in our effort (silly as some of it now seems looking back - a 5ft wall where there is now 9 ft of water )

Can anyone tell me where all of these sandbags are coming from? Did Iowa just have a billion in stock? This is where the students being gone really is bad. They probably could have got 4,000 students to help out with this.

That's true. Help from IC better come internal to the city or from the west or south .... and I'm not sure about the south ( haven't heard what roads are closed)

    They come in "bales".

Not sure where they come from, but they're were a lot of them. Hope they hold up ... I here they were short on wire ties, they could end up cutting they're own out of any wire, but it would end up having sharp ends on it that the specially produced stuff doesnt

I helped here in DSM... It gives you a big sense of pride, although it may not end up helping in the long run.

Going all the way up to 20 is the detour, but remember, you can't get off at 318 or 380 or whatever that is that goes through Cedar Rapids. You almost have to go all the way to Il before heading south. Makes your trip almost double the distance.

Good luck people in IC and stay safe.

Sorry, but there is always time to joke. There's nothing I can do about floods in IC. Looks to me like Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls have it worse.

From all the reports, that'll be changing significantly from today through the weekend.

But hey, hopefully you'll get your wish and all those Hawk fans in IC will be washed away, along with their sports complexes, houses, etc.
