Eastern Iowa flood updates - 6/12

thought I'd start a different thread for us in CF/Waterloo/CR/IC/ quad cities and such

    Cedar Rapids:

Downtown is officially out of power. Sixth Street station has been evacuated. They primarily provide steam for the downtown heat and Quacker Oats, however they can provide a modest amount of MWs if requested.

Prairie Creek is still online, but the transmission system is going to be stressed as substations are lost to the water. This includes Cedar substation - the one I spent 6 hours on Tuesday trying to sandbag

380 is completely crawling right now - mostly due to gawkers. but also because its the only road in an out of CR open at this point.

I've heard you can report to Kennedy HS to be bussed to sandbagging sites. I'm heading out there soon

The railroad bridge by Penford just collapsed!

The put railcars on it filled with rock to try to stabilize it (its old). .but now they're floating down river and may take out 12th Ave bridge

Re: Eastern Iowa flood updates - 6/12

That would of been a site to see. Does anyone have a source that is currently working that updates the river level?

The main one I have been using stopped updating at 8:40 last night.

I've been using the NOAA site ... they just announce that because of the power outage has knocked out the instrumentation and the battery backups failed.

22.4 ft at the last MANUAL reading .... sounds like they're going to try manual readings the rest of the way, but they'll be spotty

I just called my mom, who's in CR. She sounded completely frazzled and wasn't able to talk long.

I didn't get to ask her, is CR in threat of the water being shut off?

Starch plant ... I think. Big manufacturing plant.

Right next to the Flying Wienie. Or the DOT if you're not familiar with you funny named hot dog joints.

they are also closing I-80 east & westbound tomorrow afternoon, great for slow traffic as I am headed that way for a wedding tomorrow.

Re: Eastern Iowa flood updates - 6/12

Fox News Radio is reporting a levee has failed in Eastern Iowa, yet none of the Des Moines media outlets are reporting this, is the report of a failed levee accurate?

They just announced that the water plant isn't having any problems keeping up at this point ... so tentatively No.

Power problems are bad already. haven't heard about any MidAm gas problems but there's gotta be a lot of gas lines under water.

Sounds like shipping will come to a stand still this wekend. With 80 closed, barge and rail traffic at a standstill many dollars will be lost and freight will become idle, not good.
