    Coaching Pay Package Proposal

I do not think there is enough incentive pay in college football in general. For example, Dan MacCarney did not earn his pay this year, not by a long shot -- we shouldn't have to pay him $1mm. What if we did this for our next coach -- $500k base salary and $500k for every win over 6 games. The most it could possibly cost is $4.5 million, but that would mean that we won a national championship. If we won 7 games, the coach would earn $1mm, 9 games would get him to $2mm. You could play with different base amounts and incentives, but you get the general idea.

So the question is, would any coaches buy into such a system and how much is a win worth? How valuable would a birth in the Big XII championship game be?

    Something to think about . . .

I like the incentive laden contract, but we're talking about Iowa State here. We're no texas...maybe $100k per win beyond 7 wins.

    Re: Coaching Pay Package Proposal

    From the Rag:

Greg McDermott's agreement to become the Iowa State men's basketball coach is official. His six-year, $650,000-a-year contract has been signed.

According to terms of the agreement, obtained this morning by the Register:

    — McDermott receives an automatic yearly raise of $50,000 beginning on July 1, 2007, and his salary will increase by the amount of money he accumulates through performance clauses.

    — The contract consists of a base salary of $225,000, and additional guaranteed outside income of $425,000.

    — The contract includes up to $250,000 in yearly bonuses: $50,000 for making the NCAA Tournament, $50,000 for making the Sweet 16, $50,000 for making the Final Four, $50,000 for winning the national title, $25,000 for winning the Big 12 regular-season title and $25,000 for winning the Big 12 tournament.

"We had to be creative in order to be competitive," athletic director Jamie Pollard said.

    — If Iowa State reaches the NCAA Tournament next season, McDermott’s base salary for the following year automatically jumps from $650,000 to $750,000 — $50,000 for the annual increase and $50,000 for making the tournament.

McDermott, former Northern Iowa coach, replaced fired Wayne Morgan on March 22. Morgan’s annual salary was $750,000. Iowa State bought out the remaining two guaranteed years of his deal for $1.5 million.

McDermott earned a $180,000 base salary at Northern Iowa.

    Re: Coaching Pay Package Proposal

McDermott's salary is in the right direction, but it doesn't go far enough. I think DMac has similar incentives in there. I think the base should be lower so that if the team tanks, the coach suffers. And if the team does something truly great like win a national championship, the coach should get something better than an extra $50k.
