Jeremy - any updates on Taylor

Is it still listed as indefinite, or has a timeline been announced?

I believe since it is academic reasons, it is all on Taylor, so no time table can be set. He's just got to hit the books.

Maybe that is what is wrong. You don't hit books, you read them. Those darn kids.

Taylor is doing all the things he's been told to do so far. Now it's just a matter of seeing whether his hard work is paying off in terms of his most recent grades in each of his classes. Assuming it is, I'd look for him to be back in action in time for this weekend's games, but that's just a guess. I really think Coach Mac is doing an excellent job of handling the situation. He wants Taylor to be around for the long haul and to get a degree!

I think it is great. I am wondering if Mac has set a specific number of games or a timetable or anything. Nothing really gets a kid's attention like that indefinite thing.

Re: Jeremy - any updates on Taylor

I listened to the post game press conference on the cyclones.com website. They interviewed Clark, C. Johnson, then GMac. One of the questions was whether Taylor would be playing on Friday. Coach told the reporters that he hoped so, but it was up to Taylor. As long as he continues doing what he has so far (since the suspension), he would be allowed to play. Additionally, GMac said that we really need him, because he provides that extra bench strength at the PG position (my interpretation). As evidence, he pointed out that the offense looked especially "out-of-sync" when Macintosh had to sit during that stretch in the first half. Dodie was playing the point, and he isn't a true point guard. This is just a little smattering of the presser. Visit the website to hear more. I have to say that I really enjoy listening to GMac's analysis of the game, his players, etc!! Reminds me of the days of Floyd - man what a Basketball Mind!!

I hope Taylor is hitting the books hard because we could reall use his offense. Especially with Jiri out the next 6 games. I think our defense has looked great so far but the offense still has a long ways to go.

Am I the only one missing the warm-n-fuzzy feelings regarding Marsden's play so far? With Juri out and Marsden basically the only guy we have inside, it could be rough for a while.

I think Marsden is better than last year, but still not great. Still a sophomore trying to improve.

Re: Jeremy - any updates on Taylor

Yes, Ross has been quiet and still needs to get better with his interior defense and rebounding. But I think he has pretty much played the role that the coaches want him to play on both ends. Help set a lot of picks and keep his man occupied on the block on O. Play solid and physical with rebounding on D. Those are the types of things that don't show up on the stat sheets, but they are very important to every team.

What was missing last season was that every player just tried to do their own thing and seemed they didn't have a specific role for the team. Having already seen practice and the first 2 games, I have a general idea of what GMac wants each of the players to do. They will continue to learn this role and get better at it as the season progresses, and hopefully the team will keep gelling and play well as a result of it.

From what I've seen the last 2 games, it looks like Marsden's play on the defensive end is pretty good. He definitely needs to improve on getting to the basket however. Tonight especially, he was singled numerous times where he should have been able to take his man, but he seemed timid and kicked it back out every time.

Our offense struggles getting the ball inside. With Jiri out, it will be even worse. There is a reason we are shooting too many threes, and it has a lot to do with size. Wayne State was tiny, and we still struggled getting the ball inside. It could be ugly come conference play. Hopefully our defense continues to keep us in the games.

Re: Jeremy - any updates on Taylor

I think Ross is going to continue to lose minutes to Cory Johnson inside as the year rolls on. If Cory can get more confident, he has a lot of good post moves and was in general a much better ballhandler and more athletic. He's also bigger than Ross even though he's only 6'7". I loved Cory on the post game show. I hope he can play bigger than his frame and become a Greg Brunner kind of player. He has the frame for it and I think that he's physically able to do so.

And yes, it's going to be ugly without Jiri in a few games. We desperately need people who can be low post scorers, and perimeter scorers without the need to shoot the three. I'm afraid that if we have bad shooting nights, this team could get blown out badly.

Re: Jeremy - any updates on Taylor

Randy Peterson wrote in this a.m. Register that Taylor will probably play Friday. GMac made a comment about him making progress and doing the things being asked of him. A very smart move on GMac's part - letting his players know they can't just coast through their academics. (Plus - Taylor only missed the exhibition part of the schedule vs. the entire conference schedule (if he'd not made the grades 1st semester).

Couldn't have said it any better. Cory didn't see too many minutes on Friday, but it sounds like he saw a lot more on Monday. I think that directly relates to Marsden's sub-par play on Friday, G-Mac recognizing it and making a change.

Imagine that, a basketball coach making adjustments!
