    Wainwright to the DL

STLtoday - Wainwright heading to DL

I have thought that the Cards' pitching has held up remarkably well this year and is one of the reasons why they're in contention. If Wainwright is out for any significant amount of time, it could really hurt the Cards' chances of staying in the race.

That is 10 pitchers on the DL for the Cards now.

The Cards will come back to Earth eventually...this will just speed up the process. I highly doubt that Wellemeyer will be able to keep up his pace either. He's not THAT good.

I thought the same thing for a while, but they've stayed in contention this long, there's no reason it can't last until September. Wellemeyer is just one of many players for the Cards who are enjoying a renaissance this year. Guys like Ludwick and Schumaker are a playing at level they've never before achieved. Cards are getting lots of good performances from rookies. Losing Wainwright will sting, but they've had good success plugging rookies into the holes and they've performed admirably. And Carpenter is due back in July.

Sour Cubs fans need not post in this thread.

If you're counting on Carpenter to save the pitching staff you're in for a world of hurt.

    Signed,

Carpenter will be fine. He is better than Prior and Wood put together. See: Cy Young in 2005.

I'm only in for a world of hurt if I expect Mulder and Clement to come back and save the pitching staff. I would be shocked in Mulder ever throws in a game for St. Louis again, and Clement is a bust.

For the first time in recent memory the Cards have decent organizational depth for pitching, so I'm not worried if we have to tap the system a few times to plug in some holes.

Who do the Cards have in the minors, Anthony Reyes? Yeah he was real good last time he was up...

Sounds like Mulder is not coming back any time soon and I would not count on Carpenter being a savior either at this point. Wellemeyer and Lohse have pitched out of their minds, I can see them coming back down the earth eventually like Marquis has done in comparison. On top of that Wellemeyer has a sore elbow right now too.

    Re: Wainwright to the DL

Seems like this year is a year where the Cards will be close all year, but just not enough to get over the hump. They've been in first, but end up giving up 1st place a few days later. They're playing decent ball, but I don't know if I see them tearing off for 6 or 7 in a row at all this season.

Wow Travman you know more about the Cards than most Cards fans - who says the Cubs are obsessed with the Cardinals

Reyes and the Cards organization have philosophical differences about how he should be pitching. Reyes will stay at AAA, most likely, and audition to be traded to another team. He is a capable pitcher when he's not trying to pitch like Dave Duncan wants him.

Mitchell Boggs is a young hotshot who just got promoted for tonight's start against Cincinnati. Jaime Garcia is another good young pitcher in AAA. The Cards have already promoted a number of pitchers from AAA this year: Chris Perez, Todd Worrell, Mike Parisi come to mind.

In AA, the Cards also have a guy named Jess Todd who might skip AAA altogether and play in the show this year, if necessary.

Edit: Wellemeyer and Lohse > Marquis. Wellemeyer will come off the DL this week and start this weekend.

    Re: Wainwright to the DL

The Cards have had something like 12 or 15 (can't remember exactly) players have their major league debut this year. Usually, that's not a sign of success, but I'm happy with what I've seen so far from the big club.

    Re: Wainwright to the DL

I think the Cards will hang close to the Cubs still, and eventually get the wildcard. Chris Perez, a minor league pitcher, will be one of the best closers in the game when he debuts, and hopefully Carp and Mulder can come back soon.

Perez is already pitching 8th innings for the Cards. I saw him Sunday in Houston. Dude did not throw a single pitch under 96 mph.
