McCarney request: Stop asking players if 'they believe in us...(updated)

Yesterday only part of the story was published. This morning the full story was released and I have updated the original post.

Ames, Ia. - Iowa State football coach Dan McCarney pleaded with reporters Monday to lay off questioning his players about the future of the coaching staff.

"All this negativity can be almost overwhelming to young kids, to young people and to student athletes," McCarney said during his weekly press conference. "I'd really appreciate it when you talk to our players, if you'd stay away from asking them about my future, my coaches' future . . . what's their vote.

"I'd really appreciate if you'd zero in on the upcoming next two games, rather than trying to get a vote out of the kids whether they believe in us, or trust in us, or want us here for the future."

The Cyclones enter Saturday's 2 p.m. game at Colorado with records of 0-6 in the Big 12 Conference and 3-7 overall. They host Missouri on Nov. 18.

"I want (players') memories these last couple weeks to hopefully be about winning a couple games that we're not supposed to win, rather than whether I'm going to be here or not in the future," McCarney said.

The media picked Iowa State to battle Nebraska for the North Division title, but now the goal is to avoid going winless in the conference for the second time in four seasons. The Cyclones finished 0-8 in the conference in 2003.

"Something's not right," McCarney said. "We have two more weeks to figure out what it is and end up on a good note."

Fans left Jack Trice Stadium throughout the second half of last Saturday's 41-10 loss to Kansas. Afterward, reporters continued to ask players if they felt they were playing for McCarney's job.

"It's a complete distraction," McCarney said of persistent questioning. "They're emotionally really spent right now."

McCarney has three seasons remaining on a contract that pays him $1.1 million yearly. Athletic director Jamie Pollard repeatedly has said he will wait until the completion of the season before finalizing an evaluation of the program. Therefore, questions persist.

"I think it's way too much for these kids," McCarney said. "It's not too much for me, and it's not too much for my coaches - we'll handle that and we'll answer the questions. I just don't think it's fair to these kids right now."

Quarterback Bret Meyer said players clear their heads of such thoughts during practices and games.

"You might think about it when you're not playing, but you don't think about it when you're out there on the field," Meyer said of the uncertain future of McCarney and his assistants. "It's when you get asked about it over and over - that's when it's annoying sometimes."

McCarney agreed that fan criticism is unavoidable.

"I appreciate these fans and I love them," he said. "They're all as disappointed as I am right now. I don't hold any grudges. I'm not mad at them.

"I'm just really disappointed in our season. I'm going to do everything I can to try and finish this thing up right."

Say what you want about D-Mac - it's likely I've said it too.

But he always puts his players first. I will always respect him for that.

i will respect mac for a lot of things... turning the program, getting the prgram good enough where we can have a conversation like this, 5 bowls in 6 years, winning football, and running a clean and ethical program (unlike a lot of other programs around the country).

i think i'll respect him most for this, though.

Mac's demise is a product of his own success. Ironic, huh?

I completely agree with him here too. Sometimes it's hard for people to remember that these are just young kids really. I am sure the season has sucked enough without being put on the spot like that.

CyinCo, I'm not sure that I can follow you. He would be fired if he didn't have any success at ISU.

Quit trying to stop the media from asking questions. You know damn well no metter what you "request" the media is still going to ask the players questions...its THEIR JOB!

Fan request: Stop coaching the damn media and start coaching your team. Try figuring out what the hell is wrong with your offense, and trying figuring out how to win the next 2 games!

He doesn't want the media to ask these questions because he genuinely CARES about his players. To Mac, these are his kids, and he wants the media to treat them with respect. In his situation, that's a very respectable thing to do.

Re: McCarney request: Stop asking players if 'they believe in us...

It's just asking to tear the team apart. It's asking the players to "take sides." Dan doens't want these questions asked because he knows how hard everyone, the coaches and the players, work for this. Sure, to us it is just a game. But to them, this is their future, all of their hard work, and their legacy on the line. Mac doens't want any implications that they can't finish this season strong. He just wants to get focussed on the game, and I can't blame him.

Re: McCarney request: Stop asking players if 'they believe in us...

But thats part of the game you play and its part of the game you coach. Coaches need to teach the players how to deal with the media, and not try to get the media to leave the kids alone. The media is going to do whatever it takes to get a story. As much as I do not like the media, its their job, and you have to respect it. McCarneys jobs is to make sure the kids know how to respond to the media. The players are all over 18, they are men, and they should be strong enough to not let the media tear them apart. If the media is going to make them "tear the team apart", then it just proves how weak this team is, and how ineffective the coaching is.

Ya know, D-Mac hasn't done a good job this year.

But we're really reaching for reasons to be critical of him here.

Asking that question only distracts the players more. Its well within the media's rights, but it is also well within Dan's right to ask for it not to happen.

It was the right thing to do. Period. Now, obviously Mac has no real control what the media asks the players.

Re: McCarney request: Stop asking players if 'they believe in us...

Let me put it to you this way...

You're having a rough go of it at home. Lost your job and/or money is very tight. You're not able to provide for your family like they expect and you so badly want to - it seems things are getting worse.

Then, people at school, friends and other family members start asking your kids probing questions. Asking them if they feel good at home, would be better off somewhere else, respect you as a parent, etc.

How would you react to those questions? I'm gonna take a stab at - not favorably.

This is a similar relationship that D-Mac has with his players - his young men.
