Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

Singer goes from Iowa hog farm to 'Nashville Star' in a year | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Now I have more reason to watch I guess even though I had planned to watch the show before I saw this. Always makes these shows more interesting when someone from the state is in a reality show, gives you someone to root for from the start.

A little less publicized but the Copolla twins are in the final 4 on Can You Duet. They were born in Des Moines but raised out in Colorado but still have a ton of family around Des Moines.

Re: Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

Seen her perform several times. Not too bad in all honesty but she really doesn't stand out. Just the same old voice and face.

I wish her luck though. It's harder in all honesty to make country music cause everyone sounds the same.

I have a friend that sings in Nashville (Dustin Bogue) now that didn't make the tv round of Nashville star the first year, but the big knock on him was that he sounded like everyone else.

Also, just ask Jason Brown how hard it is.

This isn't the first time someone from Iowa has been on the show. Last season (Season 5 of NS), the 4th place finisher was Joshua Stevens of Churchville, IA which is just south of Norwalk.

I believed in Gene Chizik and all I got was this lousy limited-edition commemorative coin.

Re: Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

Joshua Stevens I hear has a new single out that is getting a little bit of radio play. Haven't heard it myself but I was amazed he made it to the final 4 because he kind of had a weird way of singing. He had a great song he wrote himself that I thought was the best one the night they had to sing their own songs.

As for last night, I'm not sure Shawn Mayer is going to make it as far. The clips of her audition she sounded good but her performance last night was not that great. I really like how they added duos and groups to the contest this year. I think all 3 of them had some great harmonies, the 2 girls who were just 18 and 16 were REALLY good. I would not be surprised to see them make the top 3 possibly. The 3 guys that sang "Elivira" were interesting. They harmonized well but they butchered that song by over singing it and the judges got on their case how they need to have a distinct lead singer.

In all this could be a pretty good set of contestents to watch I think. The judges are pretty to the point openly honest too. John Rich is definitely the Simon of the bunch as far as not scared to speak his mind but Jewel surprised me as she's very insightful too and not scared to disagree with the guys and not back down when arguing her point.

Re: Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

After last night I would say the top 4 on CMT's 'Can You Duet' would all finish in the top 5 on this show...

I do like that the country versions, NS and CYD make them write their own songs as part of it. That basically won it for Buddy Jewel over Miranda Lambert in season 1.

Re: Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

Well Shawn is still in it. Definitely went out on a limb by singing George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today." She didn't butcher it but she also didn't pull it off completely which is basically what the judges told her. I think she's safe for at least another week though. Couple of the guys were aweful.

The judges mentoring and having their own "mini competition" to see who improved their contestants the most was fun. I'd say John did wonders with the women, he did wonders with Alyson who he wanted gone last week who did so well this time she may stick around for awhile. Same with Ashlee, she came out of her shell some more but still has some work to do but showed noticible improvement.

Tommy (the military guy) did "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy" which was an obvious butt kiss move to win over John. All 3 judges liked it, I thought it was a mediocre performance personally. I think Justin, Coffey, and Melissa based on their performances Monday night have the most to be worried about going home next week.

Was not surprise about Third Town being voted out. They are just strange and thank God they did not do Bohemian Rhapsody like they wanted too else you might have seen John and the judges really rip into them. Next week is "Pop goes the Country" night where they will perform pop songs but I think that's ironic because nearly 1/2 of them have already done a pop song.

I saw Shawn perform over in Boone last year. Really nice gal and has a pretty nice voice. Haven't seen the show yet, I should check it out.

Re: Iowan 1 of 12 Nashville Star Finalists

Shawn has made it to the final 6 now. She might have a legit shot at the final 4 as there are at least 2 acts I think that should have been gone by now but are still left. Not sure if any of you are watching but for anyone who has been I was glad to see Tommy Stanley finally go but how Coffey has made it this far is mind boggling and the duo Laura & Sophie are about as good as gone I think considering they are so young and seem out of their league right now compared to the remaining talent.

Shawn's moment last night was her "firing" John Rich as her mentor last week and switching to Jeffrey Steele because John has been too "mean" for her style to work with. Hate to say it but of the 3 judges he's the Simon and he's been in the business long enough and worked with and wrote songs for many many big artists that the guy is not going to sugar coat his critiquing. If you don't have it he's going to come out and tell you. I've been impressed that all 3 judges have not played the "Randy and Paula" judges like AI does where Simon is the only one to speak out and the other 2 try to lessen the blow. They all 3 have been pretty brutally honest in their opinions at times.

Right now if I had to pick a final 2 Gabe Garcia and Melissa Lawson are probably going to be it as they both have been mopping the stage with the rest of the contestants every week. Shawn and Ashlee are darkhorses that are no doubt good singers but they are so inconsistent with their performances I have a hard time seeing them getting enough votes down the stretch. Was hoping the 3 girl harmony group Pearl Heart was going to hang around longer, they were awesome last night singing "Ain't Going Down (Til The Sun Comes Up)" by Garth Brooks.
