    Fleur Drive, Grays Lake Closed

Fleur Drive, Grays Lake Closed - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The city of Des Moines has closed Fleur Drive on the city's southside due to rising flood waters on the Raccoon River.

The city also completely closed Grays Lake Park, just south of downtown.

The Raccoon River is currently running at about 17 feet. The river is bankfull at 11 feet. River forecasts predict the Raccoon will crest at 19.4 feet on Wednesday. That should be high enough to require the levee gates to be closed in Water Works Park. But the crest will be well short of topping the levees at the Water Works water treatment plant. That would require a crest of 31 feet. The levees were raised after the floods of 1993 inundated the Water Works plant, forcing the city to be without drinkable water for 11 days.

In West Des Moines, Walnut Creek should crest at just short of the 15 feet required to close the levee gates across the railroad tracks just east of 63rd Street.

My National Guard unit worked at the water treatment plant in 1993. Talk about a crappy situation. Here's to that not happening again....

I work just south of Des Moines Water Works, so I will be taking a little detour getting to work today. They have a gravel road that I will need to take.

Re: Fleur Drive, Grays Lake Closed

How many times in the last 3-4 years that Fleur has been closed? Too many times if you ask me, it's time to look into a levy or a flood wall along the east side of Fleur near Waterworks Park and Grays Lake.

IMO, Fleur Dr is too vital of a road to be constanly underwater.
