I agree at some point the buck has to stop at the head coach. Having said that, it also seems to me there is another option to look at.
Both the offensive and defensive coordinators have simply not gotten the job done. They are not at a big 12 level. In the end, they are responsible for player development and play calling... yes... Dan no doubt has skin in the play calling, but if the O & D coordinators were doing their job and at the right caliber, it would be their show.
If Dan is still here next season... and I'm still slightly torn on that... we need to take some of the dollars we would save from not having to buy out his contract and bring in some high caliber, proven coordinators. Let Dan play the CEO role and let them do the job that they are supposed to do.

I think part of the reason Barney is not "getting it done" as everyone is saying is a decision Mac made three to four years ago when he held onto Fine to long. Mac made a bad decision then and should pay for it now.
The replacement of coordinators won't make enough of a difference. From what I hear it will be an all or nothing deal anyway.
It said in the paper this morning that both Cotton and Skladany have contracts for another year and they would have to be bought out of their contract. It would be almost impossible to bring in a proven coordinator, because it is not an easy fix for either the offense or the defense. Why do you think ISU is offering so many Jucos for next year. Turning around the defense or offense will take time. A new coordinator will need a few years to bring in the type of players he wants. Additionally the current players will not owe any allegiance to a new coordinator and may not buy into a new system. Next years schedule is again very difficult. If MAC is retained, the only people MAC will be able to hire is someone who has lost their job. Mac will not be able to hire an proven coordinator who will be willing to leave a paying position.
If Mac steps down, would anyone want Blarney of Skulldany be head coach? Curious. Or do we want a new start on life?
Both sides of the ball have been disasters. I don't see how you could fire the head coach and hire the offensive/defensive coordinator after playing this bad of football. Maybe the caliber of players has been low, but the coordinators have to find a scheme that works for those players. Neither have done that, and it seems like they run the exact same plays whether we're down by 30 or up by 14.
