Letterman Style List - Bottom 5 Plays vs KU

OK, I slept on it last night and awoke this morning still feeling like yesterday's game might have been the most disappointing effort I've ever seen an ISU squad put forth on the gridiron. I decided to put together a quick "lowlights" list to illustrate the ineptitude across all lines, from coaching decisions to player execution on Special Teams, Offense & Defense. Without further fanfare, here goes:

#5) Punter Mike Brantner drops a perfect snap and KU drops him like a stone on the ISU 3 yard line. TD on next play.

#4) 3 Yard TD pass to KU TE in 2nd Q, making the score 20-3. What makes this play noteworthy is the fact that DT Brent Curvey was in coverage on TE Derek Fine. Give Skladany credit for trying to use our playmakers, but what the heck!?!

#3) With ISU leading 3-0 and the defense having forced KU "three and out", Punt Returner Ryan Baum "muffs" the fair catch at the KU 46. How many muffs does Baum have this year and why was he still back there? In terms of momentum-turning plays, this might have been the worst of the day.

#2) Down big in the fourth quarter but in KU territory, ISU center Scott Stephenson (at least I assume it was him) twice in a span of three plays snaps the ball before Meyer is ready in shotgun formation. Of course the first one didn't count because we had a false start before we could snap the ball without Meyer looking!

#1) KU leading 6-3 and going into the wind, has the ball 4th & 6 on the ISU 29 yard line. They opt to throw a jump ball into the end zone and our safety attempts the INT rather than knocking it down. Result - KU TE Derek Fine wrestles it away and KU scores a TD. Why didn't the dback know to simply knock it down?

There were plenty of other bad plays on the day, but these were my personal bottom five. I find it cathartic to discuss them with my fellow sufferers! Anybody see any of these differently than I did or have any others to add that I've neglected? Let's get it out of our systems!

Positive Note to end: While many of the ISU players were sleepwalking their way thru this, there were a couple efforts that deserve recognition. Moorehead played a nice game at DE and Ryan Kock played well at FB. Alvin Bowen was all over the place making tackles and Milan Moses was OK but not spectacular. That's all I can recall....

I actully laughed when this happened. Brantner has been our best player with the most heart according to the radio guys and if Brantner has given up then only Superman or possibly Bob Dole could save this team.

Curvey in coverage has to be the worst play.
It's been said that this team doesn't play to the strengths of its players, but that was absurd.

I think the reason this happened is because Curvey has been lining up more and more as a defensive end. It is not like he was at nose guard and tried to swing out and cover the TE. My guess is we had everybody on the line of scrimmage and Curvey dropped back with the TE. This is not the first time in his career that Curvey had dropped back. He actually played it okay but is only 5'11.

I would say Milan's play was spectacular.

It wouldn't have mattered who was in coverage on that play. Actually, from my point of view, Curvey had pretty good coverage on the TE. Problem was, the KU Quarterback dropped it in right at the back of the end zone perfectly. Only way to defend a pass like that is with a safety over the top, and considering he caught it with his toes at the end line, that wasn't going to happen.

I'd personally call that play one of KU's top 5 than our bottom 5, it was simply great execution.

My criticism of this play had more to do with the defensive scheme than Brent Curvey himself. He's a fine athlete, but he shouldn't be asked to cover a receiver in the red zone. To Superfan, it happened right in front of us so I got a good look at it. It was a nice pitch & catch, but nothing of extreme difficulty factor; Brent wasn't within five yards.

I'm surprised more people aren't distressed about the lack of football IQ on the "4th & 6" 29 yard TD pass. Intercept and ISU gets the ball on the 20. Knock it down and ISU gets the ball on the 29. Attempt to intercept it and let the TE take it away = TD KSU. I'm amazed at the lack of awareness on this team, be it this play or Meyer running OOB two yards short of a first down....

Excellent post. Sometimes the other team just executes something perfectly and there's almost no way to defend it. That was one of those plays.

ISU hasn't executed many like that all year long.

Johnson fumbling of two carries in a row has to be in there somewhere.

Lol then you must have had a terrible point of view on that play. Curvey wasn't even within 7 yards of the TE on about a 10 yard pass to the end of the endzone.

Actually, it was on my end of the field and it looked like Curvey was right there.

I personally thought Milan was better than ok at 9 rec, 109 yards. Also 3 returns, with a 36 yarder and a 32 yarder. But compared to the rest of the offense I would rate this above "ok".

Seems like another perfect opportunity to blame the band. ;-)

What was that illegal snap thing about? I have never heard that one before.

I donno, I was about 15 rows up in the student section so I had a perfect side view of Curvey getting torched...I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him trying to catch the TE.

Illegal snaps are sometimes called if the center picks up the ball when they get set. That's probably what happened.
