Late basketball recruits still out there

I know everyone is a little down with the wesley johnson situation... so I posted a list of prospects for 08 that haven't made a commitment

6-9 240 PF/C Rashanti Harris... i've seen video and he is a big time athlete. would be nasty pairing him with Brackins next year.

He is a 5 star prospect out of New Hope High School in Ms.

    under the radar....

Auri Allen 6-9 300lbs out of vegas. Durango HS projects as a center obviously. hes a 2 star recruit

Martez Walker is 6-6 225lbs underrated 2 star SF out of American Christian High School in Aston, PA.

Darius Johnson-Odom is a talented undersized 6-0 combo guard out of Wakefield HS in Raleigh, NC. He's a 2 star prospect looking at colleges like Bradley in Peoria, Ill.

None of these guys have signed with any school and to the best of my knowledge they haven't given any verbal commitments. Hopefully Iowa State is at least trying to make contact with them, or at least send them a brochure about the school. These guys have a long list of schools and I see no reason why Iowa State couldn't come in and steal one of these guys.

just my 2 cents worth. I'd be going after Harris hard personally. He could come to ISU and start in the big 12 next year... and play alongside brackins. thats a pretty good selling point.

hopefully we havent given up on the 08 class just yet.

Don't know anything about these guys, but there are reasons they haven't signed. Not good enough, grades, legal troubles, character issues, injuries, etc. Bringing in one of these (or any)kids at this juncture would most likely speed up the revolving door problem.

Our best bet is to give the scholarship to one of the walk-ons and bank it for a later date.

I just have a feeling Negedu would never give us a shot. He has his eye on schools like UNC, Duke, Arizona, Indiana, Memphis, Tennessee...

Harris is also most likely going to Memphis.

Does anyone have any idea of McD is even looking at filling Wesley's open scholarship this year? Or is he saving it for next?

Probably the right move unless someone comes around who is an absolute can't miss/ must get recruit... if there is such a thing.

I know McD is building the integrity of the program and all, but if he wants to keep his job in 2-3 years, he better fill that scholarship spot this year with someone who can contribute some minutes and develop into a starter and help get a few more wins over the next 2 years.

If he fills it with an 09-10 player, that's ok, but chances are they won't contribute immediately (unless a 4 or 5 star) and it could be too late.

Also, just a few thoughts that popped into my mind if we are going to win this year.... Lucca is obviously now in the spotlight more then ever and needs to step up BIG. Garret will need to become a big time scorer for us (10-15pt/game and highly possible with his talent) and our offense will need to be restructured and centered around Brackins. If these can happen, we could be middle of the pack this year.

Filling schollies with late signees hasn't been working, as they are the ones that seem to be the problems (Taylor, Brister, Johnson, etc). I think McD has realized this and will try to get better quality gentlemen in the fall. There is a reason a lot of these guys are available in the spring.

Re: Late basketball recruits still out there

I have a feeling that spot will remain open. If there was someone they had been recruiting for the last two years that was still available that would be different. But these guys are still available for a reason and we haven't been recruting them for a reason as well.

    Negedue is not coming.

It will probably be filled by Harrison, and if not Harrison, Kyle Kelm. (Knock on Wood)

Re: Late basketball recruits still out there

Maybe it will turn out like 98 and 99.
In 98 ISU had a soph in Fizer, and Nurse and Rancik that averaged 48 points a game. I think they had a 15-15 record. In 99 they brought in Horton and Tinsley, and with a little help from Stevie Johnson, went 32-5.

I'm not comparing Brackins and Garret to Fizer and Tinsley, but a lot depends on their growth this year, and who they bring into the mix in 09.

Just throwing it out there Gus Gilchrest has been released from his LOI to Maryland, top 100 player available to play today.

I bet ol' Gary is cursing himself for dropping Bobby Maze's schollie offer.
