Still looking for car for teenager !

I posted a couple of weeks ago looking for a good quality car for my teenage son. the price I am looking for is between $1,000-$3,000.00. I appreciate the responses I received on this topic, but I had a few things come up that caused me not to take a look at a couple of cars, so I am asking again if any of you Cyclone fans have any leads on any car that might be for sale. You my PM if you like, or email me at cyclones6@mchsi.com

    Thanks !

Re: Still looking for car for teenager !

Your going to need to get something that has a solid engine with high mileage. A common problem with buying a car with a ton of miles on it is when something goes wrong it could cost you 50% of what you paid for it to fix it.
Example being the Transmission dropping on it the first year. That isn't cheap.
Here is some cars I found in 5 minutes with one website. Glad I have a few more years before I have to do this.

Buy a Honda Civic EX Model year 1993-1996. The only problem you will ever encounter is the distributor may need replaced every 100K. I put 175K miles on one, and that was the only problem I experienced.

I'm not a big fan of buying that dollar range of used car from a dealer.

Not to sound too snarky, but I also don't get why the OP wasn't able to pick up a car in that price range; It usually takes me around 48 hours to find one.

Either we're not looking very hard, or there is an additional set of discriminators we're not talking about, here. (read, being too picky for the price range.)

If I were the OP, I'd drive out to Ira, and stop at Bucklin's and ask him if he has a driveable in that price range. Chances are almost 100% that he does.

Where are you? That might help a bit. And I still say to look in the newspaper, if you live near a major city. That's how I've gotten all my cars the past 10 years or so, and I've never had a bad deal.

Re: Still looking for car for teenager !

    www.cars.com

That site does a great job of getting all the cars in that price range dealer and privately. Their are pros and cons of buying privately and from a dealership. I personally would never buy from certain dealers, but you also never know who your going to buy a car from privately either. Its a wash.. So just try and find the best deal and test drive it, look it over and maybe even bring it to a mechanical friend if they will let you etc..
You can normally get it cheaper from a classified though. Keep in mind that was only 5 minutes of searching so I am sure there will be something out there for ya..
    Good luck.

I think the Cutlass supreme was best choice.

Do reverse advertising. Put a sign in your car window saying you want to buy a car blah, blah and phone number. You might surprise yourself with the offers.

Re: Still looking for car for teenager !

too bad, you should've hit the IDOT auction on Saturday in Ames. I usually find some pretty decent deals there. You could get a Crown Vic CHEAP! of course nobody wants one, but still they were selling 2001-04 Crowns Vics with 80-120k on 'em for $1500-2500. They're V8s, but you can buy a lot of gas for the $ savings ... all this and I didn't buy one - because they look cheesey.

FWIW the trucks are taking a hit big time. Just an example:

    Lot 255: 2002 Chevy Cavalier sedan , 4 cyl, AT,AC,CC,PS,PB - sold for $4800

Lot 256: 2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 1500 pickup, 8 cyl, AT,AC,CC,PB,PS, with hard topper - sold for $4100

They had about the same amount of miles if I remember right and the little car sold for $700 more!

Re: Still looking for car for teenager !

I just went through this and am very happy with what I found. I couple of things I came accross in the process.

You should be able to get a 98 or newer if you go to 2500 or 3000. I would not pay 3000 for anything older than 98. Even if it has lower miles, all the other parts on the car (rubber, plastic, etc.. are now at least 10 years old.

Don't use a dealer unless you know someone that works there. Their markup on used cars is shockingly high, so in that range you won't get much for your money.

Body shops and mechanics are starting to 'flip' cars like people did with houses the past few years. Those can sometimes be a better option because the mechanics are actually making them more drivable, not just cleaning them and throwing them on a lot.

If you want to look online, use Craigslist for local cars. I found a lot of options on there. One thing though, there are a few people that are starting to put 02-04 cars on there with incredibly low prices. I never even checked into those because the prices were just to low for the book value.

You would be surprised how many people have a dealer license with access to an auto auction. Ask your friends, you might know someone. Give them a finders fee for biding on a car for you. You can find auction sites on line that list 'run lists' with the cars they are selling.

The single best option is to ask people you know. If you know someone that is thinking about getting a new car, and trading in an old one, step in. You will likely be able to give them nearly double what a dealer would give them on trade. It will still be a good deal for you, and the seller. However, if you buy from someone you know, don't come back to them down the road if there are problems (unless really, really, major), that is part of buying a car in that price range.
