    Re: Scanner Codes

I hope this is for fun and not mischief. If you do have evil intentions, you should know that officers often use cell phones to talk with each other or with dispatch. Also, with the 800 band system, most officers are able to make those calls from their radio.

Most of Story County runs on a 800 band system, so most scanners won't pick up these frequencies. Very few scanners will pick up VHF (like what 90% of the nation uses) and UHF (especially high UHF like what Story County uses), so you may have to get two scanners if you want to listen to surrounding counties. Story County does have some VHF frequencies that broadcasts dispatch traffic only, but you won't be able to hear the portable traffic.

The following website has some of those frequencies. For the most part, you will want to look under the trunked systems link. I have to warn you that some of the channels are misnamed.
Story County, Iowa (IA) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Also, just like a radio or tv station has to post FCC info available to the public, so does dispatch centers. If you can't find a frequency, you can stop by the applicable dispatch center and ask to see the frequencies.

    Re: Scanner Codes

I did a computer program for a 911 operation. I was suprised to learn that they often used IM to communicate. They did not want people with scanners listening to their communications if it was something sensitive. Although they also used it a lot to discuss where they would be going for lunch.

Very few people with scanners use them for evil. Everything I wrote is public knowledge, and should be. Scanners don't really give you an edge when committing a crime anyway. Officers use cell phones to frequently anymore.

Also, I wouldn't dream of giving him those codes.

    Re: Scanner Codes

I've yet to see anything that is not public knowledge, and for the record, most people that listen to scanners are no harm.

I know that. Still, why would someone make exactly ONE post to CF, and in that post ask about area scanner info???

    It's not like we're "AreaScannerInfoFanatic.Org" or something....

    Re: Scanner Codes

I've got a scanner at home and one of my frequencies is for Story County Fire. If I remember to, i'll look up the frequency and post it here tonight.

That's how I found most of my frequencies, but it's a little over whelming. Radio Shack used to publish a book every year full of scanner frequencies, but when I bought my scanner back in January, Radio Shack informed me they no longer publish the book.

    Re: Scanner Codes

My dad had a scanner when I was growing up in Sioux City. Supposedly it was interesting if something big was happening, but all I ever heard was the "where are you?" "where do you want to eat?" type of conversations. My wife is from a small town, and she thinks they're a horrible violation of privacy.
