Ranking of the NCAA football coaches - Funny hit on us and Iowa...

    Interesting tidbits.....

    College Football Power Rankings

EIU third highest paid coach does not even make the top 25 for college football coaches - CLASSIC!!!!!!

Now maybe they should evaluate a program based on convictions and Ferentz will be near the top if not number 1!!!!

Look at #18 - Brian Kelly is one the top coaches in the nation???? And we let him slip away for Chizik.......I'll take my chances with Chiz....besides didnt Mark Dantonio leave him a bowl team - not exactly taking a bunch of slugs and turning them into players.....

Whatever, Chiz has us going in the right direction.....we will get there.....then i hope he stays!!!!!

That almost made me think that Dienhardt from TSN wrote that up...

I did a little research last year on the top 20 highest paid coaches and their recruiting rankings. Everything seemed pretty normal, most coaches landing top 20 classes...until you got to Ferentz. I think he was something like the 7th highest paid and had a recruiting class around #53. Pretty embarrassing...

What was this about Mike Leach?
"This could be the year he makes a run at a Big 12 title."

Is there something going on down there that is different from the last 6 years or so? Don't get me wrong, I'd kill for Texas Tech's record over the last 7 years. It just seem TTech is pretty much the same year after year. A solid team that always puts up huge offensive numbers only to play second fiddle to UT and OU.

I just wondered if I missed something in their recruiting class or the team they are returning this year.

Tech is not going to win anything. Barring some kind of freakish collapse, it will still be UT or OU.

From what I remember, they basically return almost all of their starters on offense and are expected to be much better on defense.

    We'll see, I guess....

While I do think Kelly is an up and coming star in the coaching world, I'm glad we didn't hire him. He was begging for other jobs last season after only 1 year at Cinci.

Yeah, I see a lot of guys out there that are running after a bigger paycheck. Chizik never seemed like that kind of guy to me. Of the coaches we all though we had a shot at, honestly, Chizik seemed the most likely to want to stay here if we are willing to support him and make this his home. I'm not saying he won't move on, but, he just seems like the type of guy that holds family and respect a little closer to his heart than a bigger paycheck. He seemed, dare I say it, the most Hayden Fry like to me.

If Kelly was interviewing for other jobs you couldn't blame him for that - I saw a couple of his home games last season and the crowd (if you could refer to it as a crowd) was sparse at best. However, he should have known the situation going in. He was my pick for a head coach at the time - I liked his experience as a head coach and he seemed to win no matter the level and it never took long.

Re: Ranking of the NCAA football coaches - Funny hit on us and Iowa...

Chizik will prove out to be superior to Kelly in my opinion. ISU has far more potential than Cincinnati in FB...they (Cinci) have lousy facilities, no tradition, and have to compete with pro teams.

Whoever stated that Kelly was left a full cupboard at Cinci while Chizik was left a barren one at ISU is correct. The prior Cinci coach got the Michigan St. gig and we all know what happened to our prior coach.

Also, Cinci really lucked out last year in getting the NCAA to allow a QB transfer from Wake Forest (who had been injured) to play without sitting out. This kid was familiar with the type of system that Kelly likes to run and had been the starter at Wake in 2006 before suffering a season ending injury one or two games in. I think Cinci may have even tried to get a 6th year for the kid so he could play one more season this year (2008) but I believe they were denied.

Kelly, was feaverishly trying to get out because he can see the writing on the wall at Cinci. They started out like gangbusters last year and then really petered out in conference play down the stretch as their league started to figure out his gimmick offense.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

This is right on the money. I was on the UC campus once and saw far more students wearing Ohio State stuff than UC stuff. Very strange.

Kelly had way too many skeletons in the closet when we were looking for a coach. I would have been very disappointed if we had settled for him.

Kelly's players at Central Michigan went on crime sprees that would rival Iowa's, and the charges included murder. Kelly was also forced to apologize and nearly suspended or fired over making racially insensitive comments about the murder:

Two Central Michigan players indicted for murder - College football - MSNBC.com

His CMU teams were also consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of all Div I teams for academic progress rate (APR).

I'm glad we have Chizik and not Kelly.

I don't think Kelly is or should be #18 in the coach's ranking, but it looks like they based that on last year's w/l record more than anything else. After all, who would really think Mark Mangino is the 14th best college football coach in the world?

But I don't see it as a hit on either Iowa or ISU. Ferentz has been a head coach for 12 years and other than a fluke 3 year run has been consistently mediocre. Chizik has been a head coach for only 1 year which means he has really no history on which to base a ranking.

Chizik is a great hire. We have a great staff. We have a great program going. Chizik is not the type of coach to just bolt for greener pastures. He wants to put his signature on this program and is more of a man about character and substance then he is about $$$$$$ and opportunism. We have the right man for the job. And I think he really likes it here. And he has a staff that really likes each other and works together. And I think we are putting the money on the table to keep our assistants here.
