Why do people bash certain sports?

I'm just curious to why people here (and everywhere else) seem to bash certain sports? Is it because they don't like them? Don't watch them? Ignorance?

I've seen enough bad things said about NASCAR, golf, hockey, etc. it gets old. A lot of people like to watch these, why do some people feel the need to belittle others for doing so?

For example, people make fun of NASCAR for "driving around in circles, only turning left"...while that's true, how is that concept much different than basketball where people run up and down the same court trying to throw a ball into a basket? Every sport could be broken down into such simplistic terms that it sounds silly.

So what if some people like to watch golf and you don't. Why do some people find the need to point out how stupid golf is? I just don't get it.

For the same reason we bash our own friends for anything. Its man thing to do. It usually generates a laugh and some comradery. Does it go too far sometimes? Sure. I dont like Soccer and NASCAR, and will jab some folks who do, but I dont look down on them for enjoying those things. I just give em some crap and they return the favor.

I am going to go with my theory where I am perfect which grants me the privilege to mock/judge anyone I so choose. It is very odd that this ability was blessed upon myself and a select few people who happen to be very good friends of mine. This trait is especially enjoyable in large crowds (i.e. bars, sporting events, parks, malls, etc).

    **heavy on the sarcasm**

The thing about NASCAR is that it requires only the physical ability to steer a vehicle at high speeds between lots of congestion and the mental fortitude to last through a five-hour race. You don't have to be an athlete in any way, which makes it less entertaining to me personally, because I'd rather watch a great athlete perform than watch vehicles slash through each other. But that's just me. I suppose a lot of people do like to watch it, but I certainly don't get it.

I don't belittle people because they watch these sports. I laugh at them ;)

Seriously - I don't like golf, hockey, NBA, or MLB. I'll express my opinion about it, but I don't think anybody will be "belittled" for liking these sports.

Unless it's pro dancing. If somebody says they like watching professional dancing, I will make fun of them. A lot.

Womens basketball is horrible. I hate it because ESPN and the NBA try to jam the WNBA down our throats. I can't watch women do lay ups all day. It's also funamentaly horrible. The next person to tell me the WNBA has better fundamentals is crazy. They can't dribble half as good as (Do you think Iowa State's Womens basketball teams point guard can dribble like Tinsely). They can't dunk. They shoot the ball from there chest because most don't have the strenth to make a 3 pointer. It takes them forever to get a shot off. If they did that in the mens game they would get Brock Jacobsoned to death. I just can't stand it.

I agree... NASCAR doesn't have athletes... but, just because it isn't athletic doesn't automatically mean it isn't entertaining... I like to watch Jeopardy too.

Re: Why do people bash certain sports?

While I have certainly chided friends about certain sports, I find that I can watch just about any sporting that is televised (thank you ESPN 8). I caught part of the NCAA lacrosse championship this weekend, and even a few innings of college softball. I'll watch golf, racing (auto or horse), billiards, bowling, soccer, you name it. I guess I'm just a sports junkie or something. A couple sports I just can't bring myself to watch: figure skating and MMA (human version of cockfighting).

I'm not sure why people belittle certain sports. It frustrates me beyond belief. Almost as much as watching golf on TV. How is that even considered a sport?!?!?

Re: Why do people bash certain sports?

I don't "bash" sports but have been know to make fun in the company of friend who has no sense of humor where a certian sport is concerned. Every sport has fans but just bacause it is a competition does not make it a sport. I don't consider darts a sport or bowling for that matter. There are sports I can't stand to watch on TV like tennis, golf, or baseball but I don't bash them because I personally find them boring. I like watching soccer but I know the vast majority of grown Americans don't like the sport and that is thier right. I tend to think that people who Bash a particular sport just does not understand the sport or the types of fans its attracts. I for one would not feel comfortable hanging out with people who watch and follow the America's Cup (Sailing).

I would agree. But I think that is just as or more difficult as the ability it takes to play other sports. How many fat, out of shape NASCAR drivers do you see? Compare that to pro golfers.

It takes no real physical ability to play golf, but the mental aspect and technical mechanics of the game are second to none in my opinion.

Re: Why do people bash certain sports?

Someone actually put me in the position of defending NASCAR.....

The G forces etc that a driver has to deal with for 3+ hours are extremely fatiguing as well as the wrenching on the wheel. I have had the pleasure of driving a few different types of race cars and after a while at the wheel it becomes more than apparent that a fair level of upper body strength and stamina are required.

On a side note, NASCAR sucks....
