    Wesley's game

Wesley has been a good player for us, but lets not go overboard here.

Tell me in the last two years how many times Wesley beat his guy off the dribble and took the ball to the rim? Personally I can't think of one time.

The guy was a spot up shooter, and not much else. Yes, he could rebound well and we will miss that. And we will miss his outside shooting, which is basically all he did. I do think Staiger can fill that role though.

It just bothers me to read how much we will miss Wesley's athleticism. That is so overrated IMO. I think Wes is very athletic, but he doesn't ever use it. He just shoots jumpers all the time. Jake Sullivan could shoot outside jumpers with anyone, but I wouldn't call him overly athletic.

Moral of the story is.... yes we will miss WJ... no doubt. But he isn't Jamaal Tinsley, Marcus Fizer, Will Blalock, Curtis Stinson, etc. If he was so athletic and so great... how come he wasn't able to lead his team to the NCAA tourney?

He was a decent outside shooter, decent rebounder, poor passer, poor penetrator, and poor defender. Plus... he was about as soft as you can get! I wouldn't doubt that Wes Eikmeier could come in as a freshman and hit the outside open jumper that WJ did for us.

It just isn't as big of a loss as everyone thinks IMO.

    Re: Wesley's game

    I like it.

It would be fair to point out that he played one of those years on one good leg. That probably affects a lot of his game.

His double-double streak as a freshman might point to more toughness than we think.

Still, I agree that he is replacable. The program isn't dead without him, and the guys we have just might be able to step up and fill in the gap he left behind.

Hmmm, now we have low-post count folks who are posting on this side of the Wesley Johnson fence. How many new cyclonefanatic members have there been since the start of this fiasco?

    Re: Wesley's game

I hate what he did to the program. But to say he wasn't a good player is just sour grapes, IMO.

As a freshmen, he was second only to Kevin Durant in Double Doubles. He still averaged 12 pts and 5 rebs on a broken foot.

He had lots of room to get better. And that is the scary part. Mostly, he was playing on pure natural ability. He was going to be very good.

I completely agree that wj can be replaced and his leaving will not hurt the
    b-ball program longterm...

    Re: Wesley's game

He also played the four position his freshman year and was an off guard last year with a bum foot. By playing the four, he's not going to be expected to take people off the dribble, as he was a back to the basket player.

I think we were finally going to be able to see the real wesley johnson this year, but not anymore.

    Re: Wesley's game

I actually like the low-count posters posting, if they've been around for a long time, like this one. I think this issue has EVERYONE caring enough to post, even if the usually don't do so.

I personally do think Wes was pretty fantastic - he was #2 in double-doubles his freshman year. There was that stretch of games this year where he was getting over 20 pts/game, right before he got hurt. That being said - I'm over this. I was really ticked at first, now I just pity him. He's obviously got a lot of people around him pressuring him to make decisions based off of what's best for them, not him.

Quit ragging on low post counts. Everyone has to start somewhere. Now, people with low post counts that claim to be 'insiders', rag away... but not when someone decides to join the board just to voice their opinion. That's what the board is for, and the more members we get, the better!

I think his injury really hurt his abilities to use his athleticism very much

    Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. Dead wrong

First thing you have to look at is Wesley's injury. With his foot as hurt as it was, the opposing player would have to be awful to be taken off the dribble by Wes. I don't know how old you are, but he would have had a hard time going around you. (By the way before his injury, during an exhibition game, Wes went around his guy twice to throw down dunks)

How did Wes not use his athleticism? Let's also not forget that Wes averaged 8 boards as a FRESHMAN!! He obviously has excellent athleticism and a great knack for getting rebounds. And Wes is a spot up shooter? Watch game tape and see Wes's shooting percentage on shots off the dribble as compared to when he catches and shoots. He shot way better off the dribble. Once again your taking his game when he played off of one foot and trying to spin it to help the fact that we just lost our best player.

Wes is better than Stinson and much better than Blalock was in college. If you don't think so now, just wait a couple years and see. And once again how can you call the guy a decent rebounder when he let our team in rebounds as a freshman????

Based on what I've seen so far, I can't agree with what you said. Stinson and Blalock got us into the second round of the NCAA tourney. Each of them stayed three years, which is only one more year than WJ. Yes he's taller, but WJ will have to have an awesome third season to convince me he is better than those guys.
