    Does MLB need instant replay?

They talk about it every day anymore, so I thought I'd ask: Does MLB need some form of instant replay?

Re: Does MLB need instant replay?

If you are watching the Cubs game and are a Cubs Fan, you'd agree they need instant Replay. I don't have a problem with it, as long as there are some limitations.

They also mentioned maybe adding two more umpires and having them placed along the walls in right-center and left-center, which I think would also be a good idea.

Yes, but only for boundary calls. Not for safe/out or balls/strikes.

I'm watching today, but I'm willing to write off that one today, because I don't think I've ever seen that one happen before.

I tend to hate replay in general. I prefer to move on. Balls/strikes would seem like a disaster waiting to happen.

Part of my dislike comes from the K-State game this fall, when it was something like 10 degrees, and we waited for 10 minutes for them to realize that the play wasn't reviewable. In our section (18), we thought, "Thanks a lot!"

Re: Does MLB need instant replay?

If it is implemented, they would start with something small and make it applicable to only certain plays. The problem is they would keep pushing the envelop, and they would keep allowing more and more plays to be reviewable over time.

Has this 'growth" in use been a problem in other sports? No. Maybe a thing or two was added after the initial trial but I don't hear too many complaining and it gets the call right. The slippery slope argument here is a poor one. Institute it for HRs if nothing else. With all the unique stadium dimensions and various projections making the deflection back onto the field common these guys have proven that they screw it up now and then. We would never ever EVER see them going to replay on a pitch call or even a first base call.

Does it get the call right? It seems like it's hit or miss, since it has to be decisive to overrule the call on the field.

I would think that baseball managers would need pretty strict limits to keep them from using this as extra time for the bullpen guys to warm up.

On controversial home runs only it wouldn't slow the game down.

Re: Does MLB need instant replay?

I'm not a big baseball fan, so I'm not really that qualified to say. But what about some kind of challenge system like they have in the NFL? Each manager could get two or three challenges a game and that's it. I agree that it could get out of hand if you have replay on every little questionable play having to do with the strike zone or safe/out calls, but you if you limit it to a few choice plays per game it might be a good thing.

Re: Does MLB need instant replay?

It has been proven time and again that the only call that umps consistently get wrong is the homerun. The reason being is that they are so far from the play. Makes total sense to me then that when there is a homerun in question the ump takes a look at a replay and gets it right.

For those that say it would slow they game down, they are out of their minds. Managers and players come out and agrue those calls anyway, so no more time would be used than normal.

Bob Brenly made an interesting suggestion during a Cub's broadcast the other day... Adding two umpires and positioning them near the fence in the alleys.

I would be fine with that as well, though there would no doubt be a time when one of them would be out of position or muck up the play. Sure would cost more than cameras as well.

Re: Does MLB need instant replay?

I am probably the biggest baseball purist around (I DESPISE THE DH), but I say get the call right, by whatever means necessary.

Having said that, don't use instant replay to interpret balls and strikes, just fair or foul, safe or out and home runs.
