    Ripping songs from IPOD

Ok, I have an ipod nano, it has been 6 months since I updated it and I would like to add some new songs. Except the computer that had all the mp3's on it died, and I don't want to rebuild it just to get mp3's.

Is there a way to suck the mp3's that are already on my ipod back to my computer so they will show up in itunes?

You could take the hard drive out and put it in in one of those $25 boxes to play directly to your new computer. They let you access all your old files.

welcome to one of the single biggest reasons I despise iPods. Why can't they just make it plug-and-play simple to move your files around? Plug it in, your iPod shows up as removable media you can copy and paste files back and forth to. Every time I mess with an iPod, I spend more time trying to figure out how to do the most simple things than I do actually using the damn thing.

At any rate, I ended up using Sharepod (SharePod) to do that, though it's still way more complicated than it should be.

This may be a huge pain in the butt (although obviously a good financial move by them), but absolutely everything else is easier with an iPod. Loading it up is incredibly simple, and the user interface on the player itself is fantastic.

Ugh - that frustrates me, how it's a default setting for it to sync every time you plug it in. I always turn that off first thing when I install iTunes on a new computer, but it's horrible.

No biggie, I was getting tired of those songs anyway. Time for a fresh change.

I think you can set the ipod to b e read as a drive. At that point (without going through itunes) copy your data off of the ipod. Import the music into itunes and then sync as normal.

One would think, however Apple stores the music on the iPod in some proprietary database format that makes no sense (at least to humans), as well as making all of the music hidden on the iPod itself. So there is no way to tell what any given song on the iPod is even if you are able to view the hidden folders.

You have to drag all those hidden folders from there onto your drive and then import them into iTunes, which is able to still read the tags off the mp3s.

Anyone know how to get songs off an iPod that was formated for a mac to work on a HP computer? I don't want to lose all my old songs from my old computer from college, but I'd like to put some new stuff on there as well.

    Re: Ripping songs from IPOD

#1) Do you still have the computer? If you do, I'd recommend just using a flash drive because it saves a HUGE headache and is virtually riskless.

#2) If not, go out on the internet and find directions on how to do it. I know when my parents got their new computer, I took all the songs off my dad's iPod and put them on their hard drive, but can't find the site I used for instructions. I'll keep lookin' though. I did the same thing as well on my laptop when the hard drive crashed and I had everything backed up on my iPod.
