Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

A buddy and I were talking about next year, and both agreed that while our team will definitely be improved next year, we're still staying home in December. However we both agreed that with the schedule we have, if a couple of newcomers could make a big impact, it would dramaticlly improve our chances of bowling. It seems to me that our defense will be fairly solid, and thus its really up to our offense to not just control the ball (they seemed to do that well last year) but finish drives and put points on the board. Our running game is solid, and we have some decent receivers (I definitely like Hamilton), but we don't have a game breaker, a guy that draws attention away from our #1 receiver to really open up the passing game. If Johnson can come right in and be a threat that demands the other teams respect, it will really open the offense and give us a LOT better chance at a 6-6 season. I really think the play of guys like this will really determine where this team ends up this year, and if they can get us to 6-6 next year, '09 is looking good

It's hard to argue with that, but not very often does a freshman come in and make that kind of impact. I'm banking on Franklin being more of that guy. Better speed and has been in the system for a year.

Yeah, I don't necessarily expect him to come right in and be that player, I'm just saying that is what would need to happen for us to bowl next year, imo. It seems a lot of people on this board are expecting a bowl game, and to me they are just getting their hopes up. My point was that while I don't expect it, I think its possible, here's what needs to happen. That being said I would LOVE to see Franklin be that guy, too.

Re: Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

The only position on the entire team that I envision making a difference between bowling or not is QB. The entire defense needs to step up after the loss of the like of Tuba and Ace. But more importantly we need to put more points on the board. I wouldn't put that on a guy like Sedrick, I would put it on the QB/RB/OL to keep moving the ball and not bogging down. I huge part of that will be special teams because we need much better field position.

Re: Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

I personally feel that the offense will be fine. The OL will be improved as will the running game. I think that we have better weapons at TE and more speed at WR (if Wallace Franklin is still on the team). My big question is the Defense. Can they stop the run without Tuba, Braaksma, Ace and Banks? I think that we take a major step down at both NG and WLB.

As for newcomers, I'm not that sold that Sedrick is going to help us all that much this season. Maybe catching jump balls, but you hardly ever see TRFR WRs come in and do much. My guess on the newcomers that help the most (other than at kicker) are Carlson, Kennard Banks and either Leonard Johnson or Benton.

Re: Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

Depends on what your definition of bowling or not is....Ask this guy.

    Ok....That was bad.
I think that if we are going to go bowling this year it going to come down to
    1. Suprisingly good QB play
    2. Offensive line
    3. Runnning the ball
    4. Special teams (newbie kickers....and coverage)
    5. receivers like sed johnson.

We have to go 4-0 in non conf IMO.

If we can't give the QB some time then that negates Sjohnson.

BY the way.......I had a post awhile ago when we signed sedrick that if he were to play basketball it could be the craziest thing ever for John walters.

Johnson, passes the ball into Johnson, Back out to Johnson who takes the shot. Misses the shot, but the follow up dunk by Johnson is good.
Who would have thought that are best chance at a johnson playing basketball next year would be Sedrick.

Re: Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

I would be shocked if we go bowling. I'm not saying that a 6-6 record is impossible, but the Big12 will be too good to get into a bowl with a 6-6 record and a 7+ win season seems highly unlikely. I think the QB situation will be sufficient. My biggest concern is at receiver and the Dline. If we are solid at those positions, we'll go bowling. With that, I agree that if SJohnson is as good as he is supposed to be, it will be a difference maker.

I dont think Sed is our answer this year, he has a lot to prove. Wallace Franklin is going to be an unsung hero this year, I also think Jason Carlson will open up a whole new aspect to the passing game. Expect to see alot of bubble screens and RB screens with A Rob. Also, Picture this, Phillip Bates, Jason Carlson.. featured in, the WR option. The Spread option game is coming. This is going to be an exciting offense once everything is clicking. Expect the Defense to be surprisingly solid, This is a Chizik/Bolt Defense afterall. Success is only perfect redzone execution away. If we can put the ball in the endzone, we will go bowling........ "obviously"

    Good info as always 33.

My first thought was that Carlson will be the one to make the difference in our passing game. I thought I read somewhere where he was a good punt returner too. This is obviously something that was literally non existant last year and could really help our offense with better field position and hopefully taking a few to the house.

Re: Sed Johnson is the difference between bowling or not

Thanks 33, I like to hear about that type of offense coming!
I think everything hinges on the d-line for ISU. If they are stout and do not lose battles, ISU will be fine. If there are offensive lines that push them around, ISU will be in for a long day.
